Blue Devils Listed No. 2 in Athlon Magazine Poll

DURHAM, N.C. – The second preseason college basketball magazine has hit the newsstands with Duke being ranked No. 2 nationally by Athlon Magazine.  The Blue Devils will open practice on Friday, Oct. 19 as head coach Joanne P. McCallie enters her sixth season at Duke.

Duke has now been listed No. 3 in the Lindy’s Magazine and No. 2 by Athlon as the Blue Devils return four starters and 88.7 percent of its scoring from a year ago.

In the preseason Athlon poll, Baylor was No. 1 followed by Duke, Connecticut, Ohio State, Stanford, Maryland, Georgia, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Penn State, Louisville, Vanderbilt, Delaware, California, Miami (Fla.), DePaul, West Virginia, Wisc.-Green Bay, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Michigan, St. John’s, Middle Tennessee State and Tennessee. 

Blue Devil sophomore Elizabeth Williams was also named to the Athlon preseason All-America team.  Williams, who is a product of Virginia Beach, Va., earned second team accolades after being named the National Freshman of the Year in 2011-12.  The 6-3 center averaged 14.0 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.5 blocks, 1.6 assists and 1.5 steals a year ago, while earning, USBWA and Full Court rookie of the year accolades.

On the preseason first team was Elena Delle Donne (Delaware), Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame), Brittney Griner (Baylor), A’dia Mathies (Kentucky) and Odyssey Sims (Baylor).  Along with Williams on the second team were Jordan Hooper (Nebraska), Tayler Hill (Ohio State), Maggie Lucas (Penn State) and Chiney Ogwumike (Stanford).

Coming off a 27-6 squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight for the third straight year, McCallie returns Williams, Chelsea Gray, Haley Peters and Tricia Liston, which started a combined 116 contests a season ago.  Other returning letterwinners for the Blue Devils include Allison Vernerey, Richa Jackson,  Ka’lia Johnson, Jenna Frush and Amber HensonChloe Wells, who is out of Colton, Calif., returns for the Blue Devils, after missing the second semester last year. 

Duke welcomes a solid recruiting class that includes McDonald’s All-America selections Sierra Moore and Alexis Jones along with center Katie Heckman

Fans will be able to see the Blue Devils in action on Sunday, Oct. 28 when Duke will host its annual Blue/White contest in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
