GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke?
Jordan Long: It was actually pretty recently - winning the 3-meter at the Nike Cup. Getting first place on that was awesome. Everything finally came together after now four years of training with Drew [Johansen]. I'm proud of it paying off, all the hard work.
GoDuke.com: What is the most misunderstood thing about diving?
JL: That we're not swimmers [laughs]. No matter who you tell that you're on the swimming and diving team, they're like, 'What are you?' 'I'm a diver.' 'Oh, so what event do you swim?' 'No, I'm a diver.'
GoDuke.com: What's your favorite part of being a Duke student-athlete?
JL: The team being a second family. They're always there for you, they know what you're going through academically and athletically. You have support left and right.
GoDuke.com: What has been your favorite class at Duke?
JL: My independent study on music composition. It's the first class where I've done something I really wanted to do.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite spot on campus?
JL: The main quad/Bryan Center area. You're always running into friends, saying hi to people. It's a cool place to hang out.
GoDuke.com: Are there any words of wisdom you would like to pass on to freshmen or any future Blue Devils?
JL: Work hard in and out of the pool and academically. But don't forget to have fun because it goes by quickly. Don't forget to value your friendships that you make because after four years, you're not going to see them.
GoDuke.com: Tell us about when you first started diving.
JL: I saw diving in the Olympics. I did gymnastics when I was younger and then I found out about this diving sport. I thought it looked like fun. When I got to high school, I tried out for the team and I was like, 'This is fun, I really like this.' And here I am now. It clicked and it worked well for me and I loved it.
GoDuke.com: As a kid did you know what you wanted to be when you grow up? What do you want to be now?
JL: Ever since I was kid, I wanted to be a doctor. I still do. I've always wanted to be a surgeon - that's why I'm doing the whole pre-med route. But I've realized that I kind of want to take some time off and see if I can do something in the music industry. Going to medical school is still in the plan.
GoDuke.com: Who has been the biggest influence on your life and why?
JL: Definitely my parents. I wouldn't be here if it weren't for them. They've always been supportive of what I want to do - driving me to practice all the time, coming to as many meets as they can. They're always supporting me, just wishing me the best and helping me along the way.
GoDuke.com: If you were a superhero, what would you want your superpower to be?
JL: To be able to turn into anything, including other superpowers? Is that cheating? [laughs]
GoDuke.com: What's your favorite midnight snack?
JL: Oreos and milk and cookie dough.
GoDuke.com: Do you have any hidden talents?
JL: Making music and DJing. Not everyone knows that.
