PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Duke women's fencing team defeated No. 5 Penn State for the second time this season, upending the Nittany Lions 14-13 at the Temple Duals on Saturday. The win comes two weeks after the Blue Devils upset Penn State 16-11 at the Duke Home Meet on Feb. 10.

The Duke women (16-9) used an 8-1 effort from the epee squad to edge Penn State by one point in the final meet of the regular season. Penn State was one of four top-10 teams the Blue Devils faced at the dual meet, also taking on No. 2 Princeton, a 19-8 defeat, No. 6 St. John's, a 22-5 defeat, and No. 9 Temple a 17-10 defeat.

Led by senior captain Emily D'Agostino, the women's epees went 2-1 with wins over Penn State and Temple. D'Agostino and fellow epee Sarah Collins combined to go a perfect 6-0 against the Nittany Lions, while freshman Isabella Barna won two of her three bouts against Penn State. All three women's epees finished 6-6 against the four ranked opponents.

The No. 9 Duke men (14-8) took on No. 1 Penn State, No. 3 Princeton and No. 5 St. John's and fell to Penn State, 19-8, Princeton, 18-9, and St. John's, 16-11.

"We're seeing some good work out of the younger members of our team, and teammates have had a great 'next man up' approach to injury and sickness this season," head coach Alex Beguinet said. "But they'll need to improve in their execution before they can consistently put together enough collective wins to knock off the top tier opposition. As the dual meet season closes, we'll be focusing on regrouping and polishing each individual's game for round one of the NCAA Championships in two weeks."

The Duke men's sabers, led by senior Anthony Lin who finished 6-2 on the day, took down Princeton 6-3. The foils won 5-4 over St. John's thanks to a perfect 3-0 effort from Michael DeVito and a 2-1 showing from Rod Shayesteh in that bout.

The Temple Duals marks the completion of the 2013 regular season for the Blue Devils, who will send qualified fencers to the Mid-Atlantic Regionals on March 9. Those who advance past regionals will compete in the NCAA Championships on 21-24 where Duke has notched three straight top-10 finishes.
