DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Josh Hairston has been added as a team captain for the 2013-14 Duke men’s basketball season as announced by head coach Mike Krzyzewski Wednesday. Hairston joins fellow senior Tyler Thornton and sophomore Rodney Hood as team captains for the Blue Devils.
“Josh is certainly deserving of being one of our captains this year,” said Krzyzewski. “He has been an excellent player for us and a leader during his first three years. He is someone that has supported his teammates about as well as anybody and our players look to him for that support. With Josh joining Tyler [Thornton] and Rodney [Hood], we have three youngsters that form a great leadership team.”
Hairston is averaging 2.3 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in 91 career contests (eight starts). The Fredericksburg, Va., native has taken 26 charges, including a team-high 20 charges a year ago. He has steadily established himself as a hard-nosed competitor and an excellent weak side defender. In Duke’s two exhibition contests this season, Hairston averaged 3.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.
“It is a blessing and a dream come true,” said Hairston. “I’ve dreamed of being a captain on a Duke basketball team. I am very grateful to Coach K and our coaching staff, as well as my teammates for this amazing opportunity.”
Duke opens the 2013-14 season Friday, Nov. 8 against Davidson at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The game will televised on ESPNU at 7 p.m. with Dave O’Brien and Doris Burke calling the action.
