DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women’s cross country team begins the 2014 season ranked fifth in the Southeast Region, as announced today by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Last season, Duke placed fourth at the Southeast Region Championships, with six of the team’s seven competitors placing in the top 50.

The Blue Devils join No. 1 Virginia, No. 2 Virginia Tech and No. 3 NC State in representing the ACC in the top five of the region, while No. 6 North Carolina, No. 10 Wake Forest and No. 14 Louisville round out the conference’s presence in the top 15. The conference is also represented by a number of teams throughout the other eight regions, including in the Northeast, where Syracuse and Boston College appear at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, the South, where Florida State holds the preseason No. 1 position, the Mid-Atlantic Region, where Pittsburgh earned the No. 14 spot and the Great Lakes Region, where Notre Dame earned the No. 8 position.

The Blue Devils return five of their top seven finishers from the regional championships last season, including graduate student Jessie Rubin, senior Kelsey Lakowske, junior Anima Banks, and sophomores Hannah Meier and Haley Meier.

Duke open the 2014 campaign with the Virginia Duals on Friday, Aug. 29. The meet begins at 4:30 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va.
