Prior to all of conference wrestling tournaments the NCAA allocated 29 bids to each weight class across 10 conferences. Each conference qualifying tournament was awarded spots per weight class based on current year data. Each wrestler was measured on the following: Division I winning percentage at the weight class; rating percentage index (RPI); and coaches' ranking.
After all of the qualifying events have concluded, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet in person to select the remaining 40 at-large qualifiers, which will be announced at 6 p.m. on March 13. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers. The at-large selections will be made based on the following criteria: head-to-head competition; qualifying event placement; quality wins; results against common opponents; winning percentage; RPI; coaches' ranking and the number of matches contested at that weight class.
Gambucci picked up one of the five automatic bids awarded to the ACC 133-pound division with a runner-up showing at the ACC Championship. Seeded fifth, Gambucci posted a pair of upsets to reach the title bout. The Mansfield, Ohio native edged fourth-seeded Joey Ward of North Carolina in his opening match and dominated No. 1 seed Geoffrey Alexander 11-2 in the semifinal round to guarantee his berth in the NCAA Championships. In the championship match, Gambucci suffered a heart-breaking 10-9 loss to Virginia's George DiCamillo.
Redshirt freshman Conner Hartmann, after earning a spot on the podium in third place, will await word on an at-large berth at 197 pounds. Hartmann returned to the Duke lineup after suffering an injury Jan. 6. He was ranked 30th in the NCAA RPI prior to the ACC Championship, where he upset No. 2 seed Derrick Borlie of Virginia Tech to take third overall.
