The Duke wrestling team took some time away from the wrestling room this past fall to have a little fun dancing around campus. For those who might have missed it, the Blue Devils caught the Gangnam Style bug that was raging across the country as they put together an outstanding music video.

Sure they got strange looks as the danced around campus in their singlets, but the Blue Devils got over 62,000 hits on YouTube and even got a mention in the London Times. Now the music video landed Duke the No. 1 seed in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Best of Brand “Pure Entertainment” national competition.

In case you missed the video here it is:

In collaboration with Elite Level Sports Marketing (ELSM), the NWCA picked eight finalists in the Best of Brand “Pure Entertainment” category for programs which created non-wrestling related videos to build their team’s brand in a unique manner.  This award program initiative between the NWCA and ELSM will honor wrestling programs for their investment in marketing and continue to inspire coaches to engage in branding initiatives to strengthen support for their programs.

Fans will be a part of an online voting competition, which will count for 30 percent, starting Wednesday, June 25. Should the Blue Devils advance to the semifinal round, there will be voting Thursday, June 26 for a chance to vie for the title. Access to the match-up polls will be available on the NWCA site:

The criteria for determining the Pure Entertainment award winner will feature two key elements: a panel of judges assessing annual performance (70%) and an online voting competition (30%).

Challenge Details and Voting

The Pure Entertainment category voting will feature a brand new “Battle Round” bracket challenge format.  Teams will be paired based on their seeding and will battle head-to-head each day to advance in the competition.  Each round of voting will be open for one day from 8:00am to 8:00pm EST, and the program must win that day’s vote to advance to the next round.

Day 1: Quarterfinals - Wednesday, June 26

Day 2: Semifinals - Thursday, June 27

Day 3: Finals - Friday, June 28

Finalists & Match-Ups

A committee selected the Pure Entertainment finalists based on each video’s quality, music/sound selection, graphics, and overall impact in regards to the award category.  Based on these selections and respective seeding, the following match-ups will take place in the quarterfinal round.

#1 Duke vs. #8 Springfield

#2 Cornell vs. #7 UNC

#3 Drexel vs. #6 Indiana Tech

#4 Minnesota vs. #5 Roger Williams

The results for the Pure Entertainment award will be announced at the 2013 NWCA Convention that will take place in Fort Lauderdale, FL from August 2nd-4th.  The winner will receive a custom framed awards poster and will be honored in a feature story that will be housed on the ELSM and NWCA sites.
