DURHAM, N.C.-The Duke University wrestling team will take a short break from dual matches this weekend when it travels to the Appalachian State Open. The event will begin at Varsity Gym at 9 a.m.

Duke (1-3-1) is coming off of a tough 30-15 setback against ACC rival NC State on Jan. 27. The Blue Devils look to continue their strong wrestling after capturing four wins against the Wolfpack. Duke will send 12 competitors to the event across nine weight classes.

Redshirt freshman Bret Klopp leads Duke at 174 pounds with a 23-7 overall record. A winner in four of his previous five matches, the native of Lander, Wyo., leads all Blue Devils with 15 pins for the year. He recently posted his 10th first period fall when he defeated his NC State foe in just 1:02.

Freshman Brian Self is coming off of an outstanding 3-1 decision over NC State's Karonne Jones to improve to 12-11 overall at 197 pounds. He currently paces all rookies with 12 wins on the year and is looking for his third top-four finish in a tournament this season.

Also looking to continue their winning ways will be Willy Mello and Diego Bencomo at 165 and 184 pounds, respectively. Mello posted an 8-2 decision at NC State in the dual match to capture his fourth overall win of the year, while Bencomo pushed his win total to 18 with a 4-1 decision over his Wolfpack foe. Bencomo has won three of his past four matches, while Mello has split in his previous four outings.

Senior Mike Bell looks to add more victories to the win column at 141 pounds. The native of Rockwall, Texas is 10-9 overall in tournament action and finished as the runner-up at the Wolfpack Open. At heavyweight, redshirt sophomore Andrew Fulk has continued to improve throughout the season and recently suffered a tough 6-4 setback against the veteran Eloheim Palma of NC State.

Freshman Ryan Harding will line up at 157 pounds for the Blue Devils as he goes for his second top-four finish this season. The 149 pound division will feature senior A.J. Guardado, who is 8-7 overall on the year.

Competing unattached for Duke will be sophomore Peter Terrezza at 133 pounds, Immanuel Kerr-Brown at 149 pounds and Brent Jorge wrestling for the first time this season at 149 pounds.

Duke heads back to ACC competition with a pair of matches on Feb. 12. The Blue Devils will travel to Virginia and Virginia Tech for matches at 12 p.m., and 7 p.m., respectively.
