"That was the most dominant performance of any Duke team I've been on," Bell said. "It was awesome. It was so much fun to be a part of it. The camaraderie of it and everyone jumping off the benches, I was just so incredibly proud tonight."
Duke improves to 2-5-1 overall on the year, while Campbell drops to 4-17 overall. That was the
"I was certainly pleased with our guys," head coach Clar Anderson said. "I knew that with giving up three matches and 18 points that we would have to win the seven matches and go for bonus points so we spoke about that before the match. And lo and behold everybody got bonus points so that was very impressive and satisfying for the team."
After starting the match down 12-0 due to a pair of forfeits at 125 and 133 pounds, the Blue Devils were determined to not lose another match. Senior Mike Bell was outstanding in one of his final matches as a Blue Devil as he dominated Ethan Carmody for the 17-2 technical fall for five points. Bell nearly pinned Carmody in each of the three periods, but instead just continued to pile on the back points en route to the 15-point win. The win was Bell's 17th win of the season and first tech fall of the year.
Trailing by just seven points now, redshirt junior A.J. Guardado pulled the Blue Devils within one with a pin with five seconds remaining in the second period. Darien Peele registered the first points of the match for the Camels with an early takedown, but it was all Guardado after that as he picked up two three-point near falls and a reversal for an 8-2 lead after three minutes of wrestling. Guardado jumped all over Peele to start the second period with three takedowns in the first minute. After Peele got whistled for stalling, Guardado needed just 60 more seconds to pin Peele and make it a 12-11 contest.
Duke's domination in the match continued at 157 pounds with Ryan Harding pinning Michael Jordan in just 1:10. After registering a takedown in the early seconds, Harding capitalized on a Campbell mistake and made quick work of Jordan for his second pin of the season. Harding improves to 13-16 overall and 2-5 in dual matches this season.
At 165 pounds, Mello won in an injury default after Ryan Ham went down. Ham led 4-2 midway through the first period in a hotly contested match. Duke continued to cruise at 174 pounds with redshirt freshman Bret Klopp. Staying true to his style, Klopp shocked everyone with one move and posted his 18th pin of the season. The win extended Duke's lead to 29-12 after five matches and seemingly put it out of reach for the Camels.
Redshirt sophomore Diego Bencomo added six more points to the total at 184 pounds. The Phoenix native held a narrow 4-1 lead after three minutes and then started to completely take over in the second period as he built the lead to 9-2 before he got John Nichols on his back in the final 30 seconds for the pin. The win was Bencomo's 24th of the year and fourth fall overall.
Campbell picked up six more points with a forfeit at 197 pounds, but it was Duke finishing out strong with a major decision from Andrew Fulk at heavyweight. Fulk and Parker Burns traded points in the first period and remained tied 3-3. Fulk was outstanding in the second period as he shocked Burns with outstanding moves to earn four points on a reversal and a near fall. Feeling confident, he rode the momentum and cruised to the 13-4 win.
"Most satisfying I think was Fulk's performance," Anderson said. "[Parker Burns] was an NCAA qualifier last year, had been on a winning streak for them and beat some pretty good guys. Fulk started really wrestling and not only wrestling, but got out of the heavyweight box and was wrestling like a lightweight with scrambling and low ankle shots that you don't normally see heavyweights do."
Duke closes out its regular season on Feb. 19, hosting Maryland in Cameron Indoor Stadium at 1 p.m.
