Bencomo Advances to NCAA Second Round

PHILADELPHIA-Duke University redshirt sophomore Diego Bencomo became the 10th Blue Devil to advance past the first round of the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia with a win over No. 11 seed Kirk Smith of Boise State. Bencomo will wrestle in the second round commencing at 6:30 p.m. (ET).  

Bencomo, who qualified for the championships with a second-place performance at the ACC Championships, improved his season record to 26-14 overall and 3-2 against top-25 opponents when Smith forfeited in the first-round match. The Boise State senior appeared in just 10 matches this season prior to his contest against Bencomo. Last season, Smith posted a season record of 28-1 and was the NCAA runner-up in 184-pound weight class.

Next up for Bencomo is a second-round match against sixth-seeded Ryan Loder of Northern Iowa. Loder, a redshirt freshman, entered the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships with a record of 27-9 and the 184-pound title at the NCAA West Regional Championships. Loder defeated Hofstra's Ben Clymer in a 4-2 overtime decision to advance to tonight's match.

Live stats will be available for all matches, while live video will be available on Mats 1,2,3,4 on for the first two rounds and the quarterfinals. The tournament is currently sold out of tickets. The tournament runs from March 17-19.
