PHILADELPHIA-Duke University redshirt sophomore Diego Bencomo continued his memorable first day of competition at the 2011 Division I Wrestling Championships with a thrilling 12-10 upset of sixth-seeded and fifth-ranked Ryan Loder of Northern Iowa in the second round of the tournament. Bencomo advances to the quarterfinal round on March 18.

Bencomo becomes just the second Blue Devil wrestler to advance to the quarterfinal round after heavyweight Konrad Dudziak did so each of the previous two seasons. The win is Bencomo's 27th of the season and fourth over a ranked opponent. The fifth-ranked Loder is the highest ranked foe Bencomo has beaten during his career.

After advancing due to a forfeit in the first round, Bencomo took a 4-2 lead in the first period with a pair of takedowns. The Phoenix native came out in the second stanza and built his advantage to 9-4 with two takedowns and an escape against Loder.

The hard-fought match continued into the third period as Bencomo battled for the victory. Loder opened the final session with an escape and a takedown to pull within two at 9-7. Bencomo came back with an escape and a takedown to stretch the lead to 12-7 late in the third period. Needing a strong final push, the Northern Iowa freshman picked up three more points to make it 12-10, but Bencomo held off the late charge to post the two-point decision.

Bencomo will take on No. 3 seed and Steve Bosak of top-ranked Cornell. Bosak registered a technical fall and fall in his first two matches. Bosak, a junior, is 35-3 overall on the year and is making his second appearance in the NCAA Championships.

Session III kicks off on March 18 at 10:30 a.m. (ET). Fans can follow along via the live scoring as well as watching on ESPN3.com.
