Joanne P. McCallieDuke Head Coach
"It was a great defensive basketball game for us. If you take away the 12 points they made on threes by people who don't usually shoot them, it was an incredible defensive performance by Duke so we're very happy about that.
On Haley Peters:
"I was very proud of Haley, a terrific game for her. She battled all night long. They have some nice big bodies and Haley was just tough and aggressive rebounding and making a lot of things happen.
On Chelsea Gray:
"Chelsea did what an All-American point guard does down the stretch and that is to have great poise and execution of the offense. Unfortunately, I thought our best basketball was with six minutes left in the game.
On State's inside presence:
"They're nice big strong players (referring to Burke and Gatling). I thought we were superb defensively. It's too bad offensively, because 11 assists is not our game. That's not who we are. We expected it to be an extremely physical game."
On Marissa Kastanek:
"She's extremely hard-working. I think she's a program player. She came to NC State and from what I can gather has really believed in the team and has really been the key to driving things forward. I think she's a terrific player she can shoot, pass, dribble and do a lot of great things. I think what separates her is that she plays so hard."
Duke Forward Haley Peters
On the 12-3 run at the end of the game:
"I think we started to play our game offensively. That's when we started to have a few assists when we drove and kicked out and made a few extra passes. Things that we normally do for 40 minutes and need to do. Defensively, we did a good job of getting stops and starting to pressure them. We just started to be more of who we are."
Duke Guard Chelsea Gray
On getting to the line towards the end of the game:
"During halftime coach stressed that we need to get to the basket. I think we only shot three free throws in the first half and we weren't going to get what we wanted if we didn't attack the rim."
On talking about the loss to NC State in the ACC Tournament:
"We stressed that a lot during film and in the practices leading up to the game, and how we were down to them during me and Haley's freshman year. It was a revenge kind of game and we wanted to make a statement."
NC State Head Coach Kellie Harper
“I’m really proud of our kids, their intensity and their fight. Duke is a really good basketball
team, but we’ll try again next time.”
“I think we have a chance to beat any team in our league playing like this.”
“I thought we did some good things defensively. The biggest area that hurt us were some of the
long rebounds. I thought our half-court defense was pretty solid.”
“I want our kids playing freely on offense. I thought they took good shots tonight.”
“The biggest thing is where our focus is. A great basketball team gets excited for every opponent. We’re not focusing on beating specific basketball teams, but rather being a great basketball team.”
On Kiana Evans’ performance off the bench:
“We try to get a good rotation with our bench. She has a really nice touch on the floor. I thought
she did one heck of a job defensively. That’s one place where she really helped us tonight.”
On Duke forward Haley Peters:
“She’s just a very talented player. We have a lot of respect for her.”
NC State Senior Guard Marissa Kastanek
“I think we know that Duke is always a good team. We know we have to come with that extra
focus and extra intensity when we play them.”
NC State Junior Forward Kody Burke
“I had more energy in the second half for some reason. I feel like our guards really just look for me. I feel like a lot of my points come from our guards being unselfish.”
