DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University wrestling head coach Glen Lanham has announced the addition of Jake Patacsil to the Blue Devils coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach. Patacsil, standout for Purdue at 149 pounds, will work closely with the middle weights.

“We’re extremely excited to have Jake on board with his wrestling experience and his Big Ten Conference success,” said Lanham. “I had the opportunity to coach Jake at Purdue and am thrilled to now have him as a part of our staff.”

Patascil comes to Durham after serving on the coaching staffs at both Central College and Notre Dame College of Ohio in recent years. At Central, he helped coach the Dutch to its first national qualifier in seven years, while Notre Dame posted an 8-1 record this past season with Patascil on board.

A three-year starter at Purdue, Patascil’s name is peppered throughout the school’s wrestling records book. He currently ranks third in Boilermaker history in career wins with 120, while his .745 win percentage is 12th all-time. He holds the top three single-season marks for back points in Purdue history and his 803 overall for his career is 412 more than the next closest wrestler.  In addition to his success on the mat, Patascil made history at Purdue by becoming the school’s first wrestler to earn the Big Ten Medal of Honor. The award is given to a male and female athlete at each Big Ten school for excellence in athletics and academics.

In his first season in the starting lineup, the Sunrise, Fla., native finished with a 34-12 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Championships following his seventh-place showing at the Big Ten Tournament. Patascil posted his second consecutive 30-win season the following year with a 30-10 overall record. He took fourth at the Big Ten Championships and advanced to the round of 12 at the NCAA Championships and finished one match shy of All-America honors.

Patascil’s final season with the Boilermakers was his best as he posted a team-best 38-10 overall record at 149 pounds. He went 13-3 in duals, including a 5-3 mark against Big Ten foes. Qualifying for his third NCAA Championship with a fourth-place showing in the Big Ten Championship, Patascil excelled in the NCAA Championships to take fifth to earn All-America accolades.

Overall for his career, Patascil finished 120-41 with 25 falls and 51 reversals. His 38 wins in 2008-09 are tied for fifth in Purdue single-season history.

Patascil was a three-year captain for the Boilermakers and garnered the Purdue Outstanding Wrestler honor in three seasons. Graduating from Purdue in 2009, the 149-pounder also was bestowed the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award during his career.

Patacsil comes from a strong wrestling heritage. His father, Frank, and uncle, Ted, are former Purdue wrestlers and his grandfather, Joe Patacsil, was a 1950 national champion for the Boilermakers.
