Duke Set for ACC Championships Saturday

Setting the Scene
•  Duke begins postseason wrestling after going 6-15 overall and 0-6 in the ACC
•  Seven of the Blue Devils’ losses came against top 20 opponents, including three from the Big 10
•  Duke wrestled without a 125-pounder for much of the season, forfeiting six points in 11 duals
•  Duke finished sixth in the 2013 ACC Championship with 26 points ... The Blue Devils’ highest finish in program history is third, most recently in 2004
•  The ACC earned 34 bids to the NCAA Championship field ... The 34 berths are divided across the 10 weight classes with 197 getting five
•  Brandon Gambucci finished as the runner-up at the 2013 ACC Championships at 133 pounds, but will miss ACCs after suffering an injury midway through the year
•  Conner Hartmann looks to earn a spot on the podium for the second straight seasonfor Duke after going 3-3 in ACC action this season

• The ACC will hold the 60th annual ACC Championship March 8 in Blacksburg, Va. at the Cassell Coliseum  All of the action will be broadcast live by ESPN3

Duke In The ACC
A member of the ACC in wrestling since 1956, Duke’s highest finish in the ACC Tournament was third place five times and most recently in 2004 ... Twenty-one different Duke wrestlers have won 29 ACC titles overall ... Joel Puleo is the Blue Devils’ lone competitor to win three consecutive championships, bringing home top honors at heavyweight in 1973, 1974 and 1975 ... Five other wrestlers captured consecutive championships during their careers ... Duke has nine ACC titles at heavyweight, two at 184 pounds and one at the 174, 133 and 125-pound classifications ... Duke has had 27 All-ACC selections since teams were compiled in 1986 ... Blue Devils redshirt junior Brandon Gambucci earned All-ACC honors in 2013, but will miss this year’s ACC Championships due to injury.
Recapping 2013 ACC Championships
Brandon Gambucci lost a heartbreaker to Virginia’s George DiCamillo in the championship bout to take home runner-up honors ... Conner Hartmann took third at 197 pounds as both earned bids to the NCAA Championships on the strength of their finishes ... Duke finished sixth as a team with 26 points, an 8.5-point improvement over the previous season ... Both Trey Adamson and Brian Self advanced to the consolation finals at 174 and heavyweight, respectively.
Duke Seeding
Redshirt junior Immanuel Kerr-Brown garnered the No. 3 seed at 157 pounds to lead the Blue Devils … Conner Hartmann was tabbed in the No. 5 slot at 197 and Marcus Cain also grabbed a five seed at 165 … Seeded sixth are Evan Botwin (133), Trey Adamson (174), Jacob Kasper (184) and Brendan Walsh (285) … Rounding out Duke’s entries at the No. 7 spot are Calvin Campbell (125), Xaviel Ramos (141) and Connor Bass (149).

A pair of Blue Devils competing at the ACC Championship - Conner Hartmann and Immanuel Kerr-Brown - were among those wrestlers in the most recent NCAA RPI or NCAA Coaches Panel rankings ... Hartmann is No. 22 in the final RPI listing ... Kerr-Brown was tabbed 33rd at 157 ... Both also are in the top 25 of the NCAA Coaches Panel poll released at the end of February.

Dual Points Leaders
Conner Hartmann and Immanuel Kerr-Brown were Duke’s leaders in duals this season ... Head coach Glen Lanham often could rely on the duo to come away with points for the Blue Devils at 157 and 197 pounds ... Overall, Hartmann scored 61 points for the Blue Devils, while Kerr-Brown notched 49 in duals ... Trey Adamson was just behind Kerr-Brown with 47 points, scoring bonus points in eight of his 12 dual wins.

Cain Bumps Up Two Weight Classes
Redshirt sophomore Marcus Cain moved up two weight groups for the 2013-14 season from 149 to 165 ... The native of Winston-Salem, N.C., finished the regular season 11-15 overall and 5-10 in duals as he made the adjustments to the higher weight class ... At 149 in 2012-13, Cain finished 22-11 and 13-3 in duals.
Leading On And Off The Mat
Redshirt junior Immanuel Kerr-Brown is undoubtedly on of the Blue Devils’ top leaders on and off the mat ... A leader by example, the Rome, Ga., native serves as a team captain and is an active member of the Duke Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) ... He is a member of a number of different organizations on campus, including serving as a first-year advisory counselor ... One of the hardest workers on the team, Kerr-Brown is a mechanical engineering major ... He also was selected to participate in a leadership conference at the US Olympic training center in the summer of 2012.
Kerr-Brown Rises To The Occasion
Immanuel Kerr-Brown sports a team-best 3-2 record against top 20 foes this season ... He bested No. 16 James Vollrath of Penn State, No. 19 Austin Matthews from Clarion and No. 13 Blaise Butler ... In his two losses, one came in overtime against No. 5 Kyle Bradley of Missouri and the second was a major decision to Boston University’s Nestor Taffur.
