Blue Devils Split Pair of Bouts in Boston

BOSTON - The Duke University wrestling team split a pair of dual matches today against Boston University and Bridgewater State. The Blue Devils fell to the host Terriers 21-18 before beating the Bears in the evening bout 29-18.

Four Blue Devils went unbeaten in the two matches, while four others split their bouts between Boston University and Bridgewater State. Tanner Hough, A.J. Guardado, Diego Bencomo and Brian Self all posted two wins for Duke on the day, while Ryan Harding, Peter Terrezza, Randy Roden and Immanuel Kerr-Brown both won once.  

Duke (1-7) opened the day against Boston University. The match started at 125 pounds and the Terriers quickly jumped out to a 9-0 lead. The Blue Devils came back with two wins to make it a 9-6 match. Hough posted his second straight victory, outlasting B.J. Suitor 2-0. Guardado picked up his team-best fifth dual match victory, controlling Tyler Scotton in an 8-1 decision.

The Terriers went back in front 15-6 after a fall at 157 pounds, but the Blue Devils refused to go away as they won three of the final matches to come up just short in the match. Harding garnered a hard-fought double overtime decision over Mitchell Wightman at 165 pounds, while Bencomo garnered his second straight win. Self rounded out Duke's winners against Boston University, collecting his first dual match win of the year in a convincing 11-4 decision.

In the second match of the day, Duke used wins at 125, 141, 149, 157, 174, 184 and 197 to capture the 11-point win. Hough posted his team-best seventh pin of the season, needing just 44 seconds to get past Daniel Barker at 141 pounds. Guardado continued his trend of winning close matches as he edged Sean Fields in a narrow 2-1 decision in the 149-pound division. Kerr-Brown grabbed a 14-7 decision in an action-packed bout against Matthew Scott at 157 pounds, while Roden got past Ryan Cassidy, 8-3, at 174 pounds.

Duke's final two wins of the match pushed the Blue Devils to victory as Bencomo and Self both registered technical falls. The technical fall was the first for Bencomo this season as he pushes his win streak to three matches at 184 pounds. Self needed just 4:16 to beat Thomas Vallee by technical fall from 197 pounds.

The Blue Devils open their home schedule, February 1 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils host Davidson at 7 p.m.
