Duke Falls to No. 24 Stanford
Monday 01/18/2014  -  Duke Sports Information

DURHAM, N.C.—Facing its second top 25 opponent in as many days, the Duke University wrestling team suffered a 41-0 setback to No. 24 Stanford Saturday morning in Card Gymnasium. The Blue Devils have faced four top 25, including three top 15 opponents this season.

Duke falls to 3-7 overall with four of them coming against top 25 foes, while the Cardinal improves to 10-4 on the year. The Blue Devils are back in action Jan. 22 at Appalachian State.

Stanford jumped out to a 14-0 lead after three bouts and added six more points after a forfeit at 149 pounds by the Blue Devils. The Cardinal also got a forfeit at heavyweight to finish the match.

Coming off of a monster win against No. 12 Virginia, redshirt junior Immanuel Kerr-Brown came up just short in a 6-3 decision to Bret Baumbach. All even after the first period with Baumbach holding the riding time advantage, Kerr-Brown escaped in the third to make it 3-2.

With Baumbach having the extra point for riding time, Kerr-Brown looked for the takedown in the final period, but the Stanford senior defended well and registered a late takedown of his own for the decision. He falls to 14-7 on the year and to 7-3 in duals.

At 174 pounds, redshirt sophomore Trey Adamson had an action-packed match with Zach Nevills. The duo traded points in the opening three minutes with Nevills registering a pair of takedowns to Adamson’s escape and reversal for a 4-3 lead. Duke’s Adamson registered his second reversal of the match early in the second period to grab his first lead of the match, but Nevills escaped moments later and dominated the third period for the 9-5 decision.

The final match of the day featured No. 19 Conner Hartmann against No. 20 Dan Scherer of Stanford. Looking for his 12th win of the year, Hartmann trailed Scherer 3-0 after two periods. Needing four points to tie the match, Hartmann escaped with just 32 seconds left and added a takedown in the closing seconds, but the riding time advantage proved to be the difference as Scherer came away with the 4-3 decision.

The loss was Hartmann’s fourth against a ranked opponent as he fell to 11-6 on the year and 6-4 in duals.

The Blue Devils hit the road for their next match at Appalachian State Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m.
