DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke track and field team returns to action in the Dick Taylor UNC Challenge Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Eddie Smith Field House in Chapel Hill, N.C. The meet opens with a number of multi events on Thursday, followed by track and field events on Friday. In addition to Duke competing this weekend, North Carolina, Western Carolina, North Carolina Wilmington and East Carolina are also scheduled to attend the scored meet.

"The meet should be extremely competitive," Duke's Director of Track and Field Norm Ogilvie said. "Our early predictions have both the men's and women's team races coming down to the 4x400m relay at the end of the meet."

Duke is coming off a stellar showing at the Virginia Tech Invitational, where 12 Blue Devils earned an ACC-qualifying standard in each of their respective events.

In addition to securing ACC-qualifying marks last weekend, junior Lauren Hansson and senior Justin Amezquita both earned school records in their respective events. Hansson broke the 200-meter indoor school record after clocking a time of 24.58 and taking fifth overall in Blacksburg, Va. Hansson’s time ranks third in the conference for the 2014 season at 200m. Amezquita broke his own school record in the pole vault, clearing 17-5.75 (5.33). The Mountainside, N.J., native currently sits atop the conference with his clearance from last weekend.

An additional 10 Blue Devils, alongside Hansson and Amezquita, earned conference qualifying marks at Virginia Tech, including seniors Phil Fairleigh and Clint McKelvey (5,000m), redshirt junior Michael Krone (high jump), redshirt senior Curtis Beach (long jump), redshirt sophomore Stephen Boals (shot put) and sophomore Michael Foley (weight throw). On the women's side, the throwers led the Blue Devils in ACC-qualifying marks, with the trio of redshirt senior Michelle Anumba, redshirt freshman Urina Harrell and senior Erica Brand all securing qualifying marks, while sophomore Megan Clark cleared 13-3.50 (4.05) to also reach the conference-qualifying standard.

In addition to setting school records and securing ACC-qualifying marks, a number of Blue Devils also won numerous events at Virginia Tech. For the men, junior Henry Farley (800m), junior Nate McClafferty (mile), graduate student Mike Moverman (3,000m), the distance medley relay of freshmen Alec Kunzweiler and Dylan Murphy, sophomore Dylan Newman and junior Brian Schoepfer and Boals (shot put), all won their respective events.

For the women, Duke swept the DMR, with the relay of freshmen Haley Meier and Hannah Meier, junior Callie Francis and graduate student Audrey Huth finishing first. Redshirt senior Michelle Anumba also opened her 2014 campaign with a victory, winning the shot put at the Joe Hilton Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C., with a throw of 47-7.00 (14.50). The mark currently ranks the Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native eighth in the ACC.

The Duke women’s 4x400, consisting of Hansson, junior Alexis Roper, freshman Madeline Kopp and junior Elizabeth Kerpon, closed the track events in Blacksburg, Va., with a second-place finish. The relay currently ranks second in the conference with their finishing time of 3:42.82.

This weekend in Chapel Hill, McClafferty and Kunzwiler return to the mile after posting times of 4:09.5 and 4:10.6, respectively last weekend. The efforts currently rank the pair second and fourth among their conference counterparts early in the season.

The threesome of Moverman, junior Shaun Thompson and senior Brian Atkinson enter the 3,000 after sweeping the same event one week earlier. The trio posted the third, fourth and fifth fastest 3,000m times in the conference this season while competing at Virginia Tech. Freshman Stephen Shine, who ran his first collegiate mile last week, joins Moverman, Thompson and Atkinson this weekend, moving up in distance to the 3,000.

Graduate student Juliet Bottorff returns to the 3,000m distance after opening her 2014 campaign in a time of 9:47.4. The former ACC Champion at 5,000m is joined by teammates Huth, Ashley Berry and Colette Whitney.

In the field events, redshirt senior Curtis Beach is scheduled to participate in the long jump, looking to improve on his jump of 23-6.25 (7.17) from Virginia Tech, which ranks the Albuquerque, N.M., native third among ACC long jumpers.
