NEW ORLEANS -- The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the first Division I regional and national team computer rankings of the 2014 season Tuesday, with the Duke men’s and women’s track and field teams appearing second on the regional rankings list, one of the highest combined ranking in school history. Nationally, the Duke women’s track and field team ranks 31st, ahead of all ACC schools other than 17th-ranked Florida State. The Duke men currently sit 35th on the national rankings list, behind just two conference opponents, No. 6 Florida State and No. 25 Virginia Tech. The combined national rankings of the two teams also marks one of the highest in school history.

The Duke men’s track and field team boasts 12 individual competitors and two relay teams among the Southeast Regions top-10 performances in the early stages of the 2014 season, with senior Justin Amezquita sitting atop the rankings for the pole vault with a clearance of 17-5.75 (5.33) and redshirt senior Curtis Beach also sitting at No. 1 in the heptathlon after amassing 5,427 points last weekend. Junior Nate McClafferty currently ranks second in the mile with a converted time of 4:06.59, while sophomore Michal Filipczak ranks third in the 800 with a converted time of 1:50.53. In the field events, redshirt sophomore Stephen Boals’ throw of 58-1.75 (17.71) in the shot put ranks him third in the Southeast Region. Junior Ian Rock and sophomore Robert Rohner join Beach in the heptathlon rankings, rounding out the top three with point totals of 5,153 and 5,067, respectively.

Similar to the men, the Duke women’s track and field team showcases a number of regionally ranked performances through two meets this season, with 10 individuals and two relays appearing among the top 10. Junior Elizabeth Kerpon’s converted 400 meter time of 55.10 ranks her fifth in the Southeast, while fellow junior Abby Farley’s converted 800m time of 2:08.63 ranks her third. Graduate students Audrey Huth and Juliet Bottorff rank fourth and fifth respectively, following converted 3,000m times of 9:30.84 and 9:30.88 run at last weekend’s Dick Taylor UNC Challenge. The 4x400m relay of juniors Lauren Hansson, Alexis Roper, Kerpon and freshman Madeline Kopp rank fifth in the region with a time of 3:42.82. Duke’s distance medley relay of freshmen Hannah Meier and Haley Meier, junior Callie Francis and Huth appears second on the regional list with a time of 11:30.42 run at the Virginia Tech Invitational. Redshirt sophomore Karli Johonnot appears twice on the rankings list with the second-highest clearance in the high jump with a mark of 5-11.50 (1.82). Johonnot also owns the highest point total in the pentathlon this season, with a point total of 4,038. Fellow redshirt sophomore Teddi Maslowski sits in second on the pentathlon list with a point total of 3,776. Sophomore Megan Clark currently ranks third with a personal-best clearance of 13-9.75 (4.20) in the polevault.

After solid showings at the Dick Taylor UNC Challenge in Chapel Hill, N.C., last weekend, the Blue Devils return to competition, traveling to State College, Pa., Friday, Jan. 31, to compete in the Penn State Invitational.
