DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke women’s track and field team earned its highest regular season national ranking in school history Tuesday as the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the Blue Devils as the No. 19 team in the nation. Duke remained second in the Southeast Region. The Duke men’s track and field team ranks 51st in the nation and third in the Southeast Region.

The Blue Devils are one of only three ACC teams among the nation’s top-25 programs, with No. 12 North Carolina and No. 16 Florida State also appearing in the top 25.

A first-place finish by the distance medley relay of sophomore Anima Banks, junior Elizabeth Kerpon, freshman Haley Meier and graduate student Audrey Huth, helped bolster the Duke track and field team over the weekend at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. Graduate student Juliet Bottorff also contributed a first-place finish at 5,000 meters, Saturday evening. The DMR’s finishing time of 11:06.87 ranks 10th in the nation while Bottorff’s 5,000m time of 15:49.80 ranks seventh.

In addition to this weekend’s performances, a number of competitors currently own marks that rank among the top-10 in the nation. Sophomore Megan Clark posted the third-highest pole vault height in the country after recording a mark of 14-3.50 at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet, while redshirt sophomore Karli Johonnot amassed the eighth-best point total in the nation for the pentathlon with 4,038 at the Dick Taylor UNC Challenge earlier this season.

In total, four Duke relays, three DMRs and the 4x400, and six individuals rank among the nation’s top 50 in their respective events.

The Blue Devils are set to compete at the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg, Va., Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21 and 22. The meet marks the final regular season competition for the Duke track and field team before the conference championship in Clemson, S.C., the following weekend.
