DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke sends a contingent of track and field competitors to this weekend’s Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va. The two-day meet begins at 2 p.m. Friday, May 9, with the men’s decathlon and concludes Saturday, May 10, at 9:45 p.m. with the women’s 10,000.

The first and second-place finishers in this season’s conference championship decathlon, sophomore Robert Rohner and junior Ian Rock, return to the multi-event competition for the first time since the ACC meet. Rohner and Rock’s point totals of 7,233 and 7,122, amassed at the conference meet, rank 21st and 24th, respectively, in the nation this season. Freshman Chaz Hawkins is also set to participate in the decathlon this weekend.

On the women’s side, redshirt sophomores Karli Johonnot and Teddi Maslowski are scheduled to compete in their third heptathlon this season while senior Miray Seward, also entered in the seven-event competition which begins at 2:15 p.m. Friday, looks to participate in her second this year. Johonnot and Maslowski posted strong performances earlier in the season at the Texas Relays, with Johonnot setting a Duke record point total of 5,342 and Maslowski scoring the second-highest point total in Duke history with 5,265.

In the field events, redshirt senior Michelle Anumba returns to the shot put for the first time since placing third at the ACC Championship with a season-best mark of 52-10.75 (16.12). Joining Anumba in the women’s shot put is redshirt freshman Urina Harrell, who saw a personal-best effort of 47-9.00 (14.55), also at the conference championship, ranking her second all-time in Duke history.

Redshirt sophomore Stephen Boals also returns to the shot put Saturday for the first time since a sixth-place finish at the conference championship. Boals enters the competition with a season-best mark of 56-8.00 (17.27).

Redshirt senior Austin Gamble is scheduled to step into the discus ring Friday evening, following a fourth-place finish at the ACC Championship. Gamble’s season-best distance of 185-11 (56.66) currently ranks 37th in the nation.

On the track, school-record holder at 400 meters and freshman Madeline Kopp steps into the blocks Friday at 6:35 p.m. for the same event. Kopp last ran the open 400 at the ACC Championship, where she ran the fastest time in Duke history, 54.08, in the preliminary round of the competition.

Kopp is joined by junior Lauren Hansson, who ran a time of 54.55, the fifth-fastest time in Duke history, also at the ACC Championship. Junior Elizabeth Kerpon steps onto the track Friday evening for her first open 400 of the outdoor season, while fellow junior Callie Francis competes in her third.

Hansson, Kopp and Kerpon will team with junior Abby Farley Saturday in the women’s 4x400m relay. The same quartet placed fourth at the ACC Championship, clocking a time of 3:38.10, which ranks second on Duke’s all-time list.

The middle-distance events see sophomore Anima Banks moving up to the 1,500 for the first time this season. Also competing in the 1,500 for the first time in 2014 is graduate student Audrey Huth, who has primarily raced at the 5,000m distance.

The men’s 1,500 field will include four Duke competitors, juniors Nate McClafferty, Brian Schoepfer and Henry Farley and freshman Stephen Shine.

Duke concludes competition with senior Christian Britto entered in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase. Britto, a native of Orinda, Calif., clocked a personal-best time of 9:06.67 at the Penn Relays two weeks earlier, narrowly missing a first-place finish in the event.

Competition begins Friday at 2 p.m. with the men’s decathlon. A full list of scheduled events for Duke competitors can be found below.
