DURHAM, N.C. – Three Duke track and field relay teams were recently ranked among the top 10 in the nation, as part of Track and Field News’ 57th Annual Relay Rankings. Relay teams appearing on the list include the men’s 4x800-meter and 4xmile teams and the women’s sprint medley relay team.

The men’s 4x800 team earned a fourth-place ranking behind Penn State, Villanova, and Georgia Tech, while the men’s 4xmile ranked ninth and appeared ahead of all Atlantic Coast Conference schools other than Notre Dame. On the women’s side, the sprint medley relay team earned a seventh-place ranking, ahead of all ACC schools.

The 2012-13 season proved to be a record-setting year for the men’s 4x800 team. The foursome of Tommy Meister, Kyle Moran, Nate McClafferty and Michal Filipczak placed second at the Millrose Games in an indoor school record time of 7:26.88 on Feb. 17. The time eclipsed the previous indoor school record of 7:26.94 set in 2010. In the spring, the combination of Meister, Moran, Filipczak and Curtis Beach covered the same distance in 7:20.97 to best the previous outdoor school record of 7:25.20 by nearly five seconds. The effort also earned the squad a fourth-place finish at the prestigious Penn Relays on Apr. 25.

The Blue Devils’ 4xmile saw similar success on the track in the spring, racing to an eighth-place finish in a competitive field at the Penn Relays on Apr. 27. The team of McClafferty, Brian Schoepfer, Mike Moverman and James Kostelnik combined for a time of 16:37.52, which currently ranks fifth on Duke’s all-time records list.

In the spring, the women’s sprint medley relay team of Baily Murphy, Lauren Hansson, Elizabeth Kerpon and Cydney Ross teamed together to run a school record time of 3:46.43 Apr. 26 at the Penn Relays. The time erased the previous record of 3:55.57, which stood for 12 years. The team finished second at the event.

The men’s relay teams will be returning all members of the 4x800 and 4xMile, other than Kostelnik,. The sprint medley relay will lose Ross’ 800-meter leg; however the remaining three members of the record-setting team will return for the 2013-14 season.
