DURHAM, N.C. – Eighteen representatives of the Duke track & field program, including 10 men and eight women, have been named to the 2011 All-ACC Academic Outdoor Track & Field teams as announced by Commissioner John Swofford Tuesday, June 27. To be eligible for All-ACC Academic team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his or her academic career.

From the men’s side fifth-year senior John Austin and senior Ryan McDermott became four-time honorees in 2011, while junior Michael Barbas earned his third career selection and senior Bo Waggoner picked up his second All-ACC Academic accolades. Rounding out the Duke contingent is freshman Tanner Anderson, sophomore Curtis Beach, senior Josh Lund, sophomore Mike Moverman, senior David Piccirilli and junior Tony Shirk.

Six of Duke’s 10 selections – Anderson, Austin, Barbas, Beach, Lund and McDermott - on the men’s side were also All-ACC honorees in 2011, joining a list of 14 student-athletes to earn both All-ACC Academic and All-ACC selection this year. In addition, Austin, Beach and McDermott were three of eight ACC athletes on the all-academic team to also received first or second team All-America recognition this season.

The Duke women are led by seniors Amy Matulewicz and Kate Van Buskirk, who both received their second career All-ACC Academic team honors. Sophomore Juliet Bottorff, freshman Erica Brand, freshman Destiny Roseman, junior Cydney Ross, senior Emily Schwitzer and junior Brittany Whitehead all made their first appearance on the squad in 2011.

Bottorff, Brand and Van Buskirk were three of 22 student-athletes to earn both All-ACC Academic and All-ACC distinction in 2011, while Bottorff, Ross and Van Buskirk joined 12 other conference all-academic team selections in first or second team All-America status at this year’s NCAA Championship.
