DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke cross country and track & field programs have announced the addition of Tom Cuffe to the coaching staff for the 2012-13 seasons. Cuffe will serve as an assistant women's cross country coach under the direction of head coach Kevin Jermyn, as well as an assistant for the men's and women's track & field teams.

"Coach Cuffe brings to our program over 25 years of experience in developing high level performing student-athletes and first class citizens," Jermyn said. "He has exceptional technical knowledge of the sport, strong teaching skills and proven leadership strategies.  I look forward to seeing Coach Cuffe make an immediate positive impact on our team success and their overall student-athlete experience."

Cuffe comes to Durham from Monsignor Farrell High School in Staten Island, N.Y., where he served as the head track & field and cross country coach from 1998-12. During his time at his alma mater, Cuffe guided Farrell to three Catholic Intersectional state championships and five consecutive Mayor's Cup crowns (2004-08). He also saw numerous student-athletes and relay teams earn qualification for the Penn Relays Championship of America, Millrose Games, New York state championships and national-level competitions, as well as national rankings and All-America honors.

Prior to taking over the head coaching position at Farrell, Cuffe directed the cross country and track & field programs at St. Joseph by the Sea High School in Staten Island to national prominence during his 10-year tenure (1988-98). He also previously served as the assistant cross country and track & field coach at Tottenville High School in Staten Island from 1982-88.

In 30 years of coaching at the high school level, Cuffe-led teams captured 34 Staten Island titles, 21 New York sectional championships, eight New York City Mayor's Cups and four Catholic Intersectional state championships. He also guided 48 student-athletes to high school All-American distinction and saw 40 percent of his athletes go on to compete at the collegiate level. Five distance medley relay squads qualified for the Penn Relays finals under Cuffe's tutelage, in addition to two 4x800m relay teams.

"Tom brings a wealth of experience from a hotbed of high school track, the greater New York area," said Director of Track & Field Norm Ogilvie. "His teams' great success over a long period of time at venues like the Armory, Madison Square Garden, Van Cortlandt Park and Randall's Island, as well as at high school national championships, has earned Tom a great deal of respect in the profession.  We are delighted to have a coach of his caliber join the Blue Devils."

A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Cuffe graduated from Monsignor Farrell High School, where he was an All-American in the steeplechase. He went on to compete in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field at the University of Houston and earned a degree in physical education from Long Island University in New York in 1988.
