Duke Collects Eight Wins on Day Two at ITA Regionals

CARY, N.C. – The Duke men’s tennis team collected eight victories during the second day of competition Friday at the ITA Carolina Regionals played at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C., after being delayed for two hours in the morning due to wet courts.

Senior Henrique Cunha, the top-seeded player in the draw, defeated Clemson’s Gerado Meza 6-1, 6-1 in the third round, before defeating Wake Forest’s Daniel Kreyman to reach the quarterfinal round to be played on Saturday.  The senior is slated to next face Andrew Adams of South Carolina on Saturday.

Junior Chris Mengel reached the quarterfinal round after coasting to victory against Elon’s Brian Kowalski, 6-1, 6-2, then edging N.C. State’s Austin Powell, 6-4, 7-5. Mengel will play UNC Wilmington’s Sam Williams in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

The top-ranked freshman in the ITA preseason rankings, Michael Redlicki advanced to the quarterfinal round after defeating seventh-seeded Nelson Vick of North Carolina in the third round. After dropping the first set in his round of 16 match, the freshman responded in the final two sets to earn a 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory. Redlicki will face Elon’s Cameron Silverman on Saturday.

Junior Fred Saba advanced to the round of 16 after defeating UNC Wilmington’s Chris Cooprider in the third round, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. However the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native was defeated by third-seeded Yannick Maden of Clemson, 6-4, 6-2.

Sophomore Jason Tahir, sophomore Raphael Hemmeler and freshmen Josh Levine each were defeated in the third round. Tahir dropped a hard fought decision against North Carolina’s William Parker, 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-3. Hemmeler was defeated by Brett Clark of UNC, 7-6 (5), 6-2, while Levine dropped his match against 12th-seeded Esben Hess Olessen, 6-2, 6-3

After a two hour delay in the morning, the freshmen tandem of Daniel McCall and Levine advanced to the second round after edging Davidson’s Chris Mark and Kevin Moore, 9-8 (6). The duo will face North Carolina’s Connor Daily or Taylor Meyer on Saturday.

Two rounds of doubles and one round of singles are scheduled to be played Saturday, with the first round of doubles scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
