Anumba, Boals Win Shot Put at JDL Fast Track

DURHAM, N.C. – A number of Duke track and field members competed on Friday afternoon, with some student-athletes traveling to the Penn State National Invitational in State College, Pa., and others competing in the Hilton Garden Innvitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Blue Devils returned to competition on the heels of a strong showing at the Dick Taylor UNC Challenge one week earlier.

Redshirt senior Michelle Anumba earned her second win of the season in the shot put on Friday evening, posting a season-best mark of 49-8.25 (15.14) while teammate and senior Erica Brand placed second with a 46-2.75 (14.09) performance. Redshirt freshman Urina Harrell, in her third competition of the season, notched a distance of 45-3.50 (13.80), placing her fourth overall. Freshman Amarie Bremel rounded out the Duke women shot putters, placing 14th overall with a distance of 39-10.00 (12.14).

Redshirt sophomore Stephen Boals extended his winning streak in the shot put to three meets after placing first at the Hilton Garden Innvitational. Boals secured the victory with a 56-11.50 (17.36) effort. Redshirt junior Kyler Shumway joined Boals in the competition, earning a fifth-place finish with a 52-5.25 (15.98) performance.

The quartet of sophomore Anima Banks, junior Elizabeth Kerpon, junior Abby Farley and graduate student Audrey Huth teamed up to compete in the distance medley relay at the Penn State National Invitational. The foursome finished fifth overall in a time of 11:07.85. This time ranks the relay team third on Duke’s all-time list. Banks opened the relay with a 3:23 1200 meter leg, before Kerpon took the baton and covered 400m in 53 seconds. Farley received the baton as the third leg, finishing her 800 in 2:08 before Huth closed the relay with a 4:41 split in the mile.

Action resumes tomorrow for the Blue Devils, with redshirt junior Michael Krone kick starting competition for Duke at the Hilton Garden Innvitational. He will compete in the high jump at 9:30 a.m. Farley is set to open competition for Duke at the Penn State National Invitational, entering the open 800 at 3:35 p.m.
