BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Day two of the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg, Va., proved just as successful as day one for the Duke women’s and men’s track and field teams, as a school record fell in the 400 and multiple personal records were posted.

Freshman Madeline Kopp highlighted the Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon, posting a school-record time of 54.07 for 400 meters, improving on her previous personal-best by over a second. Saturday’s performance marked the third open 400 of Kopp’s collegiate career. Kopp placed fourth overall, with junior Lauren Hansson placing sixth in a personal-best time of 54.48. Junior Callie Francis rounded out Duke’s 400 contingent, placing 12th overall in a time of 56.49.

In the men’s 400, senior Marcus Wright became the first Blue Devil harrier this season to dip under 50 seconds for the distance, besting his previous personal-best time of 51.63 after finishing in 49.54. The effort earned Wright a sixth-place finish overall.

The duo of junior Henry Farley and sophomore Dylan Newman placed first and second, respectively, in the 800, posting times of 1:53.18 and 1:53.52. Both Farley and Newman narrowly missed the conference-qualifying time of 1:53.06, however each earned season-best marks in the event.

Senior Spencer Pecha continued Duke’s winning ways, placing first in the 5,000 after finishing in a time of 15:04.92. Pecha’s performance was dominant, as the second-place finisher crossed the line nearly 10 seconds behind the Gillette, Wyo., native.

Duke excelled in the field events as well, Saturday, with the shot put trio of redshirt senior Michelle Anumba, redshirt freshman Urina Harrell  and senior Erica Brand sweeping the event after posting marks of 52-8.00 (16.05), 46-11.00 (14.30) and 46-7.50 (14.21), respectively. Anumba’s winning distance is a season-best while Harrell’s effort set a personal record. Redshirt sophomore Karli Johonnot also secured an ACC-qualifying mark in the event after recording a personal-best distance of 43-5.25 (13.24).

In the jumps, senior Tanner Anderson posted a season-best height of 6-11.75 (2.13) in the high jump, winning the event. Junior Michael Krone placed third overall after a clearance of 6-8.00 (2.03). Redshirt senior Curtis Beach won the men’s long jump convincingly, posting a distance of 24-2.25 (7.37), a season best.

Duke travels to Clemson, S.C, Thursday, Feb. 27 for the ACC Indoor Championship.
