DURHAM, N.C. – On Friday, February 27th Duke student athletes Marvin Marcelin, a senior on the football team, and Emily Sherrard, a junior on the women’s cross country team attended Cary Elementary School as part of the Read Across America program.

The two Duke student athletes attended as part of Celebrity Reader Day as guest celebrities along with various other athletes from N.C. State and other important community members.

Marcelin attended a 4th grade and kindergarten class where he read two Dr. Seuss books and handed out certificates of achievement and medals.
Sherrard also read and handed out certificates of achievement and medals to a 4th and 1st grade class.

The elementary students enjoy getting to meet their celebrity readers and asked both Marcelin and Sherrard questions about Duke, school, athletics, and the importance of reading, studying and going to college.

This is the 11th anniversary of the NEA Read Across American program at Cary Elementary School.

The current year’s theme is “Building a Nation of Readers.”

During the month of February the students at Cary Elementary School completed an optional reading requirement.  The students who successfully completed the program received a certificate of achievement and a medal from each celebrity reader.
