Men Claim Second In Boone, Women Take Sixth At Penn State

BOONE, N.C. and UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. --- The Duke men’s and women’s cross country teams competed on Friday, with the men at the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C., and the women at the Penn State Invitational in University Park, Pa. The men placed second out of 20 teams and the women were sixth of 25.

In western North Carolina, freshman Bo Waggoner led the way for the Blue Devils with a ninth place finish in 24:45. Junior Kevin McDermott placed 16th with a clocking of 25:16. Right behind him was senior captain Chris Spooner in 25:14 for a 21st place finish. Rounding out Duke’s top-seven scoring runners was a quartet of freshmen in Joshua Lund (25th place, 25:19), Ryan McDermott (27th, 25:19), Cory Nanni (31st, 25:28) and Isaac Dunkelberger (44th, 25:48).

218 athletes competed at the eight-kilometer Blue Ridge Open. Duke finished second behind Texas with 85 points and coach Norm Ogilvie’s season record improved to 30-14.

At the Penn State Invite, junior Maddie McKeever continued her successful season with a third place finish in a time of 20:51. Sophomore Emily Sherrard was the Blue Devils’ next top finisher with a 21:55 clocking and a 34th place finish. With a strong showing in 44th place was freshman Christy Adamyk, who ran the race in 22:03. Duke’s remaining four scorers included junior captain Patricia Loughlin (51st, 22:17), junior Molly Lehman (56th, 22:19), freshman Emily Schwitzer (57th, 22:20), and freshman Katelyn Bastert (69th, 22:35).

The six-kilometer race saw 278 athletes, with West Virginia winning the meet with 86 points. The Blue Devils were without sophomore standout Kate Van Buskirk but still placed sixth with 185 points. Coach Kevin Jermyn’s record now stands at 32-5 for the year.

The Blue Devils’ men’s and women’s teams will next compete on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the ACC Championships in Charlottesville, Va.
