DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Brinson Paolini of the Duke men’s golf team recently sat down with GoDuke.com and shared highlights throughout his golf career. Paolini owns a team-best 72.2 stroke average and three top-five finishes for the season.
GoDuke.com: What kind of clubs do you play?
Brinson Paolini: I primarily play Ping clubs; I have a Ping i20 driver and three-wood. I also play Ping irons throughout the bag, Titleist Vokey wedges and a Ping Craz E putter.
GoDuke.com: What kind of pre-round superstitions do you have before tournaments?
BP: I always play with pink tees; that is my one superstition. My sister plays golf as well and one day I didn’t have any tees, so she gave me her pink ones and I shot the lowest round I have ever shot. Ever since, I have always used pink tees. Other than that, I have to feel like I am looking good in my clothes, which helps me play well.
GoDuke.com: Is there a shot that sticks out in your mind that you have hit under pressure?
BP: I hit a pitch shot in the NCAA’s my sophomore year. We were on the borderline to get into the match play and I had to keep it under a tree but get it over a bunker. I was worried about hitting the shot too high and coach told me that I have never hit a shot too high in my life. He was absolutely right, it freed me up and I hit the shot and it worked out well since we got into the match play.
GoDuke.com: How many hole-in-ones have you hit?
GoDuke.com: What is your go to shot?
BP: I like a low draw.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite club?
BP: My seven-iron. It is worn out more than any of my other clubs, because I love to practice with it.
GoDuke.com: Do you have a ball mark with any special significance?
BP: I always try to use one of the old quarters with an eagle on the back when I am playing, not one of the new ones. I always try to mark my ball with it heads up. The lower the year the better off, like I used have a couple from the ‘60s which I always prefer to use, but they are tough to find.
