CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large Teams

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke’s Brinson Paolini was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Division I men’s at-large third team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday. The Virginia Beach, Va., native collected the honor for the first time in his career and adds to an impressive 2012-13 haul of accolades that includes the Byron Nelson Award as well as All-ACC and PING All-East Region selections.

The at-large team for the Capital One Academic All-America program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo for both men and women; bowling, crew and field hockey for women; and volleyball and wrestling for men.

Paolini is one of three ACC performers named to the Academic All-America at-large men’s team along with fellow third team honorees Ryan Hawkins (Virginia Tech – swimming) and Matt Snyder (Virginia – wrestling). A total of seven golfers, including Paolini, received spots on the 45-member Academic All-America teams.

Paolini is coming off an impressive senior season in which he guided the Blue Devils to a school record five tournament titles, including the 2013 ACC Championship. He registered the second-best single season stroke average (71.48) in school history and closed out the season 22nd in the Golfweek / Sagarin Rankings. Paolini led the Blue Devils in under-par rounds (16), rounds in the 60s (8), even-par or better rounds (19), top 5 finishes (4), top 10 finishes (6), top 20 finishes (11), sub-par strokes per round (3.68), percentage of fairways hit (.800), putts per round (28.84) and par 4 scoring (4.04), while placing in the top 20 in all 11 stroke-play events.

For his career, Paolini played  a total of 133 rounds over 45 tournaments and registered a 72.17 career stroke average (second all-time at Duke). The two-time All-ACC honoree and 2010 ACC Freshman of the Year is scattered throughout the record books ranking in the top five in rounds in the 60s, under-par rounds, even-par or better rounds, even-par rounds, top 5 finishes, top 10 finishes and top 20 finishes. Paolini also owns four of Duke’s top 10 seasons of percentage of fairways hit and is one of three players in Duke history to finish in the top 10 at the ACC Championship three times.

In addition to his individual success, Paolini has guided Duke to nine tournament wins over the past four years including the 2010 Callaway Collegiate Match Play, 2011 NCAA East Regional, 2013 Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate and 2013 ACC Championship.

Paolini is the 10th Duke golfer to earn Academic All-America honors and the first since Adam Long in 2009.
