Duke Places Ninth at General Hackler Championship

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. -- Sophomore Motin Yeung fired a closing round 72 (E) to lead Duke to a ninth place finish at the General Hackler Championship at the TPC of Myrtle Beach. Yeung wrapped up the event with a 10-over 226, while teh Blue Devils posted a 314-301-298=913 (+49).

Middle Tennessee State posted a third round low 291 to claim the team title with a +20, 884. Kent State was two shots back and followed by Iowa State (890), East Tennessee State (896) and East Carolina (897).

Corey Conners (Kent State) and Andrew Dorn (Coastal Carolina) shared individual medalist honors with even-par 216s. Kent State's Taylor Pendrith was one shot back with Ryhs Pugh (East Tennessee State) two shots off the pace and Scott Fernandez (Iowa State), Payne McLeod (UNC Wilmington) and Robin Sciot-Siegrist (Louisville) finishing tied for fifth at four-over (220).

Yeung got off to a slow start Tuesday with a double-bogey on his first hole (No. 10) before climbing back to even-par with birdies on No. 13 and No. 14. He suffered another bogey on No. 16 to make the turn at one-over before adding birdies on No. 1 adn No. 6 to move into red figures. After a bogey on No. 7 dropping him back to even-par, Yeung closed par-par for his team-leading eighth round of even-par or better golf.

Freshman Max Greyserman finished tied for 23rd after posting a final round 75. He closed the event with a 12-over 228. Greyserman opened Tuesday with a birdie-bogey-birdie start but was unable to tack on any more birdies in the round. He made the turn at even-par but suffered three bogeys on the final nine holes including two over the final three holes of play.

Alexander Matlari, a freshman from Germany, had a final round 79 to tie for 32nd with a 14-over 230 (79-72-79). He suffered a pair of double-bogeys early in the day before stringing together seven straight pars. He was plagued by three more bogeys in a five hole stretch on the front nine before closing the event with three straight pars.

Junior Michael Ricaurte had his best round of the tournament with a two-over 74 to finish tied for 41st with a 233 (+17). The Columbus, Ohio, native opened with pars on No. 11 and No. 12 before dropping a stroke with a bogey on the par 3 13th hole. He ran into trouble with a double-bogey on the next par 3 (No. 17) before righting the ship with birdies on No. 1 and No. 6 to get back to +1. Ricaurte carded a bogey on No. 8 but responded with pars on No. 9 and No. 10 to close out the tournament.

Turner Southey-Gordon finished tied for 44th while playing as an individual after posting rounds of 78-75-81, while senior Austin Cody was tied for 61st with an 86-81-77=244.

Duke returns to action March 14-16 at the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.

NOTES

*** Yeung has now shot even-par or better in eight of 15 rounds this season … he leads the team in top 20 finishes (3) and under-par rounds (5), while also sharing the team lead with three even-par efforts

*** Yeung recorded 11 birdies in the event, tied for third-most ... Greyserman had 10 birdies, tied for fifth-most

*** Cody shared the tournament lead in par 3 scoring at -2 (2.83)

*** Yeung and Ricaurte were among the leaders in par 5 scoring at -1 (4.92)

*** Matlari registered a team-high 34 pars during the 54-hole tournament
