DURHAM, N.C. -- Junior Turner Southey-Gordon fired a two-under 68 Monday to lead four players with Duke ties in the opening round of the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship in Brookline, Mass. Southey-Gordon is tied for seventh after the first day of competition, while Duke graduates Michael Muehr and Julian Suri as well as senior Yaroslav Merkulov each shot 73 or better.
Southey-Gordon got off to a strong start at Charles River CC with birdies on No. 10 and No. 13 to move to two-under. The native of Canada suffered a double-bogey on the par 5 15th hole and had a bogey on No. 18 to make the turn at one-over. He recovered after the turn with birdies on No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 to get back to two-under. Southey-Gordon capped the day with five straight pars for a 68.
Muehr, a 1994 Duke graduate, is tied for 19th after posting an even-par 70 at Charles River CC. He began play on the front nine and quickly moved to one-under with a birdie on No. 2 (par 5). Following seven straight pars, he suffered a bogey on No. 10 to fall back to even-par. Muehr birdied the par 4 12th hole before dropping a stroke on No. 15. He closed with three straight pars to rest inside the top 20.
Suri, a 2012 All-America selection, fired a one-over 71 The Country Club and is tied for 37th. The St. Augustine, Fla., native posted the eighth-best round on the course Monday. Suri opened up on the back nine in strong fashion with birdies on No. 10 (par 4) and No. 12 (par 5). Following bogeys on No. 13 and No. 15, he moved back into red figures with a birdie on the par 4 17th hole. Suri recovered from a bogey on No. 1 with a birdie on the 184-yard par 3 second hole. Suri stumbled down the stretch with bogeys on No. 7 and No. 9 but is still in strong position heading into tomorrow's second round.
Merkulov is tied for 86th in the 312-player field after shooting a three-over 73 at The Country Club. The Penfield, N.Y., native got off to a terrible start with bogeys on No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5. He settled in with a birdie on the 311-yard par 4 sixth hole before suffering a bogey on No. 9. Merkulov rattled off eight pars and a birdie (No. 14) on the back nine to remain in contention for match play.
Nick Hardy holds the tournament lead after shooting a five-under 65 at Charles River CC. Richy Werenski is one shot back, while four players are tied for third at three-under.
The top 64 finishers after tomorrow's second round advance on to match play.
