DURHAM, N.C. -- Julian Suri, a 2013 Duke graduate, posted back-to-back rounds of 71 to finish tied for 27th and move on to match play at the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship in Brookline, Mass.
Suri got off to a slow start Tuesday at Charles River Country Club with two bogeys over the first six holes of play. He settled in with five straight pars before carding his first birdie on the 340-yard, par 4 12th hole. Suri added a birdie on the par 5 15th hole to move back to even-par before closing par-bogey-par for a one-over 71.
Suri, a 2012 Golfweek third team All-America selection, faces Zachary Olsen in the opening round of match play Wednesday. The tandem tees off a 8 am at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
Neil Raymond and Brady Watt shared medalist honors with six-under 134s, while Oliver Goss, Justin Shin and Matt Fitzpatrick were three shots back in third place.
Duke junior Turner Southey-Gordon missed the cut by one stroke at the U.S. Amateur with a five-over 145. After posting a two-under 68 at Charles River CC in the opening round, he posted a seven-over 77 Tuesday. Southey-Gordon suffered an early double-bogey but remained in solid position with three birdies en route to an even-par 34 on the front nine in round two. The Toronto native stumbled after the turn with a double-bogey and two more bogeys to slip to four-over. He settled in with four straight pars but was unable to maintain the momentum before finishing double-bogey, bogey to miss out on match play. Southey-Gordon finished tied for 67th overall.
Michael Muehr, a 1994 Duke graduate, also struggled on the back nine at The Country Club en route to a nine-over 79 Tuesday. He carded one birdie and 10 pars in the second round but also suffered five bogeys, a double-bogey and a triple-bogey. Muehr finished tied for 146th with a nine-over 149 (70-79).
Senior Yaroslav Merkulov never got his round on track Tuesday while posting an eight-over 78 at Charles River CC. He finished tied for 182nd in the 312-player field with an 11-over 151.
