SOUTHPORT, NORTH WEST, ENGLAND -- Duke rising junior Tim Gornik shot rounds of 77 and 69 to finish the stroke play portion of the 116th British Amateur tied for 36th with a three-over 146. Gornik posted a two-under 69 on Tuesday to climb the leaderboard and secure a spot in match play.
Gornik opened play on Tuesday with 10 straight pars before slipping to one-over with a bogey on the par 3 11th hole. Following a par on No. 12, he carded birdies on No. 13 (par 5), No. 14 (par 4) and No. 14 (par 4) to move to two-under. Gornik added a birdie on the par 5 17th hole before dropping a stroke with a bogey on No. 18.
Gornik's five-over 77 on Monday at the challenging Hillside Golf Club placed him in the middle of the pack heading into the second round. The 7,035 yard, par 72 layout tested the field throughout the day yielding two under-par rounds and just five even-par outings. Gornik carded two birdies, nine pars and seven bogeys on the day.
The Ljubljana, Slovenia, native got off to a slow start with three bogeys on the first four holes of play. He made the turn at five-over following a bogey on No. 9. Gornik settled in on the back nine with pars on No. 10 and No. 11 before dropping a stroke with a bogey on No. 12. He recovered to birdie the 401-yard, par 4 14th hole but bogeyed the following hole to remain at six-over. Gornik sandwiched pars around a birdie on the par 5 17th hole to close his opening round.
With the stroke-play stage of the British Amateur Championship completed the top 64 players with ties contested advance to the match-play stage over four days (June 15-18) at Hillside Golf Club.
Gornik faces Antonio Hortal of Spain on Wednesday in the opening round of match play. The match is scheduled to begin at 11:20 am local time. The winner advances to face the winner of a match between Adrian Otaegui (Spain) and David Coupland (Boston).
