SOUTHPORT, NORTH WEST, ENGLANDTim Gornik's run at the 116th British Amateur came to a close on Wednesday in the opening round of match play at Hillside Golf Club. He battled throughout the day before eventually falling 3 & 2 to Antonio Hortal of Spain.

Hortal had an outstanding day with four birdies and just one bogey to outlast the Duke rising junior. Gornik played the opening nine holes at one-under with two birdies, six pars and one bogey but still found himself 1-down heading into No. 11. He ran into trouble off the tee on the 11th but added a birdie No. 14 to trim back into the deficit.

Hortal came away with a victory on No. 16 to close the match and advance into the second round.

"It was a great experience playing in the Amateur for the second straight year," Gornik said. "I played great golf for the last two days and came up just short today against Antonio. All in all it was a good week and I'm looking forward to playing the English Amateur next week."
