SANTEE, S.C. - Duke rising sophomore Austin Cody birdied the second playoff hole to defeat former Pinewood Prep teammate Kamito Hirai and win the 2011 Santee Amateur Golf Tournament. COdy shot 69-72=141 to tie for the tournament lead and force the playoff.
"It feels good to start off the summer with a win," Cody said. "I came in with a lot of confidence after the NCAAs. It's a great start to the summer. We've got a lot of golf left and we'll see what happens the rest of the way."
Cody shot a 69 on Saturday at Santee National Golf Course and entered the final round with a one-shot lead over Hirai and Coastal Carolina's Trip McAlister. Both Hirai and McAlister fired front nine totals of 33 to take the lead from Cody midway through the final round. Cody rallied with a birdie at 16 to take the lead, only to be matched by Hirai's birdie on 17th hole. All three players parred the final hole to send Cody and Hirai into the playoff.
After both players parred the first playoff hole, Cody claimed the tournament title with a birdie on the par 5 second hole. Cody has now won the Santee Amateur twice.
"It was a grind out there with the heat and the golf course and all these great players playing in it," Cody said. "I was lucky to come out on top."
