DURHAM, N.C. – Duke senior Brinson Paolini is one of five finalists for the 2013 Byron Nelson Award presented by Cleveland Golf/Srixon, as announced Thursday by the GCAA . Paolini is joined as a finalist by Evan Beck (Wake Forest), Pedro Figueiredo (UCLA), Charlie Hughes (Washington) and Andrew Yun (Stanford).

Candidates for the Nelson Award must be a graduating senior and the selection committee considers equally a nominee’s entire collegiate academic and golf career as well as his character and integrity while in college. Particular consideration will be given to a nominee’s good citizenship, as portrayed by Mr. Byron Nelson over the course of his life and golf career.

Paolini, currently No. 20 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, is enjoying a terrific senior season that has included seven top 20 finishes and three team titles. The Virginia Beach, Va., native leads the Blue Devils in stroke average (72.1), top 5 finishes (3), top 10 finishes (4), under-par rounds (9), even-par or better rounds (11), pars per round (11.55) and putting (29.25).

For his career, Paolini ranked second in the Duke record books with a 72.32 stroke average over 122 rounds. He is also second in rounds in the 60s (24), even-par rounds (20) and even-par or better rounds (61). He is also among the all-time Blue Devil leaders in under-par rounds (41), top 5 finishes (11), top 10 finishes (16), top 20 finishes (24), tournaments played (41) and rounds played (122).

Paolini is the first Duke Byron Nelson Award finalist since Adam Long was named to the list in 2010. The recipient of the 2013 Nelson Award will be named May 2.
