PALOS VERDES, Calif. – Blue Devil Alejandra Cangrejo fired an opening round 70 to lead the fifth-ranked Duke women’s golf team into a tie for second place at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Monday, hosted by Ohio State University at the 6,017, par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club. The Blue Devils posted an opening round six-over par, 209, to end the first round in a tie for second place with Florida, two shots behind first round leader UCLA.

A native of Bogota, Columbia, Cangrejo opened her round with four consecutive pars before registering a birdie on the par five, fifth hole. Cangrejo followed the birdie with four pars to close out the front side in 34, before bogeying the par-four 11th hole. She responded immediately with a birdie on the par-four 12th, but dropped another shot on No. 13 bogeying the par four. Cangrejo closed the round with a birdie on the 453-yard, par-five 16th hole to post an even-par 36 on the back nine to give her the outright lead in the event. She entered the spring after only playing one round in the fall, which was a 76 at the Landfall Tradition.

UCLA totaled a four-over-par, 288, to take the team lead in the event, while Duke (290), Florida (290), Southern California (298), Texas (299), Baylor (302), Oregon (303), Colorado (304), Arizona State (305), Pepperdine (306) and Wake Forest (306) rounding out the top 10.

Freshman Celine Boutier and junior Laetitia Beck both finished the day in a tie for 14th after firing a pair of two-over par, 73’s despite having very different rounds. Boutier, a product of Montrouge, France, calmly came out in the front nine and made eight pars to go along with one birdie to record an opening 34, before having a more up and down back nine. Boutier bogeyed holes 10, 12 and 15, but was able to respond with birdies on the 355-yard, par-four 11th as well as the par-five 16th hole.

Beck, who entered the round with a 73.80 stroke average on the season, made bogeys on the first and third holes before settling in to her opening round, and making birdies on the par-five seventh hole and par-four ninth, respectively. Beck opened the back nine with bogeys on holes 10, 11 and 15. Much like Cangrejo and Boutier, Beck was able to capitalize on the par-five 16th to close the day with a 73.

Three-time All-America Lindy Duncan kicked off her spring season with bogeys on three of the first six holes, before rallying with two birdies to close out the nine at one-over-par. On the back nine, the 2012 PING NGCA National Player of the Year made bogeys on the par-four 12th and the par-three 15th to collect a three-over-par, 74.  She is tied for 19th overall in the individual standings.

Freshman Yi Xiao struggled during her first competitive round of 2013 and fired a seven-over-par, 78. Xiao started off the day with a number of bogeys, grinding to five-over-par through six holes. Xiao finished the front nine with a birdie on No. 9 for a front nine 39, and followed that up with a three-over-par, 39, on the back as well. She is tied for 53rd overall.

Irene Jung, a sophomore from Bedford, Nova Scotia, fired a one-over-par, 72, to put her in a tie for ninth while competing in the event as an individual. Jung bogeyed the par-four first hole, before notching a par on each of the next eight holes to make the turn at one over. Jung made a bogey on the par-four 10th, but responded with a birdie on No. 11 to bring her round back to one over. Jung had a par on each of the final seven holes to post a 72.

The Blue Devils will get back to the links for the second round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. (ET). For live scoring, visit www.golfstat.com.
