NEW ORLEANS, La. – The third-ranked Duke women’s golf team seeks to defend its title as the Blue Devils begin play Sunday, Feb. 24 at the 2013 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship, hosted by Tulane University at the English Turn Golf & Country Club. The 54-hole event will pit the Blue Devils against eight other top-25 teams list in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index rankings, including three of the top five teams in the country. Last season, Duke won the Allstate Sugar Bowl Championship after posting a three day total of 13-over-par.

The Blue Devils kicked off their spring season with a third place finish at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Feb. 11-13 in Palos Verdes, Calif., where they carded rounds of 290-295-296 to finish at 29-over-par, 11 shots behind winner UCLA. Duke was led by junior Alejandra Cangrejo, who led the tournament after firing two rounds of one-under par 70, before posting a final round 82. The Bogota, Columbia native concluded the tournament in a tie for 15th with a three day total of 222 and enters the Allstate Sugar Bowl Championship with a 74.5 stroke average on the year.

Senior Lindy Duncan enters the Allstate Sugar Bowl Championship after posting rounds of 74, 74 and 75 at the Northrop Grumman Challenge to put her in a tie for 18th place. A native of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Duncan is a three-time first team All-America selection and is coming off a junior year in which she became the third Duke golfer to be named the PING NGCA National Player of the Year. Last season, Duncan led the Blue Devils at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Championship tying for fourth with a three round total of one-under par, after firing a final round 69.

In addition to Cangrejo and Duncan, senior Stacey Kim, junior Laetitia Beck and freshman Celine Boutier will represent the Blue Devils in New Orleans. Kim enters the tournament with a 75.5 stroke average on the season, including two rounds of par or better in the fall, highlighted by a one-over par 73 at the rain-shortened Landfall Tradition, putting her in a tie for 15th.

Beck, a native of Caesarea, Israel, entered the spring with a 73.8 stroke average and kicked off the season with rounds of 73, 77 and 73 to put her in a tie for 18th place at the Northrop Grumman Challenge. A two-time All-ACC selection, Beck tied for ninth at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Championship last season.

Boutier owns a 73.8 stroke average thus far in her freshman campaign and posted an 11-over par 224 at the Northrop Grumman Challenge, good enough for a tie for 22nd place. A native of Montrouge, France, Boutier has recorded four rounds of par or better on the season and has notched one top-five finish and two top-20 finishes.

The three-day, 54-hole event will feature 18 holes each day on the par-72, 6,105-yard English Turn Golf & Country Club. Play will begin on Sunday, Feb. 24 and Monday, Feb. 26 from holes No. 1 and No. 10, while Tuesday’s final round will begin with a shotgun start.
