Duke Moves to Fourth at Mason Rudolph

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Following a two hour rain delay, Duke’s third-ranked women’s golf team returned to action Saturday, for the second round of the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn. The Blue Devils opened the day on the back nine of a wet Vanderbilt Legends North Course and ended the afternoon with a one-over-par (289). Duke moved from eighth to a tie for fourth, with a total score of 585 over 36 holes.  

UCLA (573) moved into first place after Arizona State (578) shot five-over-par on the day. NC State (583), Vanderbilt (585), Duke (585), UNC (589), Auburn (591), Virginia (593), Alabama (594) and Michigan State (596) rounded out the top 10.

Sophomore Celine Boutier rebounded from a nine-over-par, 81, with an even-par, 36, over the first nine holes Saturday. Boutier posted a one-over-par, 73, for the round and currently sits in 61st place. The Montrouge, France native recorded pars on the 10th, 11th, 13th, 14th and 18th holes, as well as rolling in a birdie on No. 12. Boutier’s steady play continued after the turn, as she recorded three successive pars. Boutier closed the front nine with a one-over-par, 37, after five pars, two birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. She hit 10 greens, 12 fairways and had 30 putts on the day.  

At the conclusion of the second round, freshman Yu Liu matched her first round score, recording a one-over-par, 73. Liu continued her solid play with a birdie on the 12th, 14th and 18th holes. Liu closed the first nine holes with a one-under-par, 35. The product of Beijing, China saw mixed success on the front nine, recording a birdie on the par four No. 1 before notching a bogey, par, bogey over the second, third and fourth holes. Liu sits in 21st place with one round of golf remaining.

Senior Alejandra Cangrejo carried over her strong play from the first round, shooting an even, 72. The Bogota, Colombia native opened the second round of the Mason Rudolph Championship with a par on No. 11 and a birdie on the par three 12th. Cangrejo posted a near-perfect first nine holes, notching just one bogey on the 18th hole and a flawless front nine, carding seven pars and two birdies for a two-under-par, 34. Cangrejo is currently in 8th place, overall with a 143.  She hit 10 greens, 13 fairways and had 28 putts in the round.
 
Freshman Sandy Choi ended the second round with a five-over-par, 77, and remains 51st overall. Choi bogeyed the first hole of the round on No. 10 before carding four consecutive pars. The San Diego, Calif., native closed the first nine holes with a par, birdie, par and a one-over-par, 37. Choi struggled on the front nine, recording two bogies and a double bogey before ending the afternoon on a four-over-par, 40.  She hit seven greens, 11 fairways and totaled 31 putts on Saturday.

Senior Laetitia Beck moved into 26th place after closing the second round with a one-under-par, 71. Beck recorded six consecutive pars on the front nine, before marking a birdie on the scorecard on No. 8. A product of Caesarea, Israel, Beck carded a one-over-par, 37, on the first nine holes, following six pars, one birdie and two bogeys.  She owns a two-day total of 147 entering the final day.  Beck hit 11 greens, eight fairways and had 28 putts on the afternoon.

After carding an even 72 in the first round of play, junior Irene Jung concluded the second round, playing as an individual, recording a ten-over-par 82. Jung notched a two-over-par, 38, over the first nine holes and an eight-over-par 44 for the final nine holes.

Leading the individual action is Virginia’s Elizabeth Brightwell with a 36-hole total of 139. The Mason Rudolph Championship concludes Sunday, Sept. 22, with the Blue Devils teeing off at 9:15 a.m (EST).  Living scoring is available daily at www.birdiefire.com.
