PARKER, Colo. – Duke University two-time All-America Brittany Lang and the United States squad is set to open the 2013 Solheim Cup on Friday, Aug. 16 at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colo. Lang and the U.S. will go up against the European squad from Aug. 16-18.
Lang, who was an All-America with the Blue Devils in 2004 and 2005, will participate in her third Solheim Cup. A product of McKinney, Texas, Lang was the 2004 National Rookie of the Year and a 2004 and 2005 first team All-America at Duke under head coach Dan Brooks. She won six tournaments in only two years for the Blue Devils.
Captained by 18-time LPGA Tour winner Meg Mallon, this year’s U.S. Solheim Cup squad consists of eight veterans and four rookies. Led by the RICOH Women’s British Open winner and runaway U.S. points leader Stacy Lewis, the young team will also seek guidance in Solheim veterans Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer, Brittany Lincicome, Angela Stanford, Lang, Morgan Pressel and Michelle Wie. Four dynamic rookies who are eager to play as contributing factors on Team U.S.A. include Lexi Thompson, Jessica Korda, Lizette Salas and Gerina Piller.
The European team is the reigning Solheim Cup champions, after claiming a 15-13 victory in 2011 at the Killeen Castle in County Meath, Ireland. The U.S. Team currently leads the Europeans with an 8-4 record in Solheim Cup history. While the Euros have given the Americans a run for their money during foursomes and four-ball matches, the tournament tends to end in dramatic fashion with Sunday’s singles event, which has historically been dominated by the U.S. Team.
