TULSA, Okla. – Senior Henrique Cunha advanced to the third round of the main singles draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s All-American Championships on Thursday as the Duke men’s tennis team continued play at the event, hosted by the University of Tulsa.

Cunha, the top-ranked player in the ITA’s preseason rankings, cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Hunter Reese of Tennessee in Thursday’s first round. In the afternoon, the Duke senior went on to edge Ohio State’s Chris Diaz in a decisive third set, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. Cunha will now play Emilio Gomes of Southern California in the third round of singles on Friday.

Junior Chris Mengel, who is listed No. 19 in the preseason rankings, suffered a 6-3, 6-2 first round loss to 13th-seeded Mikelis Libietis of Tennessee. However, Mengel was able to rebound during the afternoon, defeating Esben Hess-Olesen of North Carolina in a first round consolation match, 6-4, 6-4. The junior is scheduled to play Josh MacTaggart of Indiana in the second round of the consolation bracket.

After winning each of his three matches at the qualifying stage in a decisive third set to advance to the main draw, sophomore Raphael Hemmeler was defeated in his first round match against UCLA’s Marcos Giron, 6-3, 6-2. However, he responded with a win in the first round consolation play, defeating Vasko Mladenov of St. John’s 6-3, 6-3. The sophomore will play Anthony Rossi of Kentucky in the second round of the consolation bracket.

In doubles, the eighth-seeded duo of Hemmeler and Cunha advanced to the second round of the main draw after a walkover victory against USC’s duo of Gomes and Yannick Hanfmann.

The third round of singles is scheduled to be played in the main singles draw on Friday, as well as the second and quarterfinal rounds of doubles. The second round of singles matches will also be played in the consolation bracket.
