Hey Blue Devil fans,

I hope everyone is having a great summer!

I am eager to say that I am honored to be on a team that has now captured the team title at the NCAA Championship for the sixth time. What a fantastic way to end my freshmen year! I will miss our two seniors, Laetitia and Aleja!!! While most of my teammates flew back to Duke after nationals, I had to fly to Venice for a study abroad program.

It was my first time in Europe and as soon as arrived, I had to find my way to the dorms located at the Venice International University. It was definitely a frightening experience! I found myself surrounded by many tourists, unfamiliar Italian words, and of course, water. I had to take several waterbuses called a vaporetto to finally reach the island called San Servolo where the university is located.

My first week in Venice has gone by so quickly! Before coming to Venice, I have never met any of the students in this program. Everyone welcomed me by congratulating our victory at nationals! The first thing they noticed about me was my horrible sock tan I have from playing golf.  But now I am friends with everyone in the program and we explored around Venice together!

The best part about being in Venice is the food. I finally got to taste real Italian food and it is absolutely amazing. I have been eating pizza and pasta everyday and I have a new obsession over an Italian ice cream called gelato!

The class that I am taking here is an Art History/Religion class taught by Professor Miglarese from Duke. The first day of class we had a guest speaker who talked about an island in Venice called, Torcello. After listening to the lecture, we planned a field trip to Torcello the next day. It was fascinating to see and explore everything in person.

On Sunday afternoon, some students and I went to an island called Lido and I found a sign that lead to a golf course! Next time I come to Venice, I will definitely bring my golf clubs to experience playing golf on “The Floating City.”

It’s been a great start to my summer and I’m so excited to stay here for the next four weeks!

Good luck to all my teammates playing tournaments this summer! Miss you all!!!

Sandy Choi
