GLEN COVE, N.Y. – It took extra holes Monday, but Duke University junior Celine Boutier advance to the second round of match play at the 2014 U.S. Women’s Amateur, which is being played at the Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove, N.Y.

A native of Montrouge, France, Boutier was able to take a 1up advantage after two holes with her second straight par against Ashley Holder, but a bogey by Boutier on the 151-yard, par three third hole dropped the match back to even par.

The match remained all square through hole seven before Boutier suffered a bogey on No. 8 to fall behind, 1up.  A birdie on No. 9 by Holder sent the match to a 2up ledger with nine holes remaining.  After back-to-back pars by Boutier and bogeys by Holder, the match went back to even with six remaining.

Boutier, who was seeded No. 7 overall, won her third straight hole with a birdie on No. 14 to take a 1up advantage.  The match went to the 18th hole with Boutier holding the lead but the reigning National Player of the Year suffered a bogey to send the match to extra holes.  Boutier was able to par the first extra hole, while Holder had a bogey to move the Duke golfer to the next round.

Next up for Boutier will next face 39th-seeded Kristen Gillman in the second round.

Recent Duke graduate Alejandra Cangrejo dropped a 2up decision to Eimi Koga in the first round of match play.

The Golf Channel will air the match play portion of the championship Aug. 6-10 from 3:00-5:00 p.m.  Schedule of play will be second and third rounds Aug. 7, quarterfinals Aug. 8, semifinal Aug. 9 and a 36-hole championship match Aug. 10.

Duke features two past U.S. Amateur winners in Amanda Blumenherst (2008) and Virada Nirapathpongporn (2003).
