PALOS VERDES, Calif. - The 13th-ranked Duke women's golf team opened the 2012 spring campaign on Monday by shooting an eight-over-par, 292, and sits in second place at the 5,912-yard, Par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, Calif.

The Blue Devils are eight shots behind first round leader, UCLA (284).  Rounding out the top 10 teams are Denver (295), Ohio State (296), Ohio State (296), Southern California (297), Pepperdine (300), Arizona State (302), Michigan State (302) and Florida (302).

Junior Lindy Duncan, who is the top-ranked golfer in the nation, carded a two-under-par, 69 and is in second place individually.  Denver's Rachael Watton leads the action with a four-under-par, 67.  Duke sophomore Alejandra Cangrejo is tied for third along with three others, who are at one-under-par.

Four different Blue Devils -- Duncan, Cangrejo, junior Stacey Kim and sophomore Laetitia Beck -- led individually at one point during the opening round.

A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Duncan posted three birdies, two bogeys and four pars to open the action on Monday.  After making the turn at one-under-par, Duncan totaled eight straight pars before rolling in a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 18.  She hit 12 fairways, 10 greens and had 27 putts on the day.

Cangrejo, who is out of Bogota, Colombia, equaled her best round of her sophomore campaign with a one-under-par, 70.  She opened with a bogey on the first hole (No. 10), but came back to notch a birdie on the 12th before posting her first collegiate eagle on the 450-yard, par five 16, which vaulted her into the individual lead at two-under-par.

After making the turn with a two-under-par, 34, Cangrejo birdied the first hole to move to three-under.  She then struggled for three straight holes with bogeys to fall back to even par.  Cangrejo closed with a birdie on the 370-yard, par four ninth to end the day at one-under.

Kim, who is from Columbus, Ga., carded a 75 on day one and is tied for 29th overall, after hitting 12 greens, nine fairways and totaling 32 putts.  She started her day with two pars and then had a bogey.  Kim turned it around with three consecutive birdies to move to two-under-par and a share of the individual lead.  With a bogey on the 18th hole, Kim made the turn at one-under-par.

On her final nine, Kim suffered two double-bogeys and two bogeys on her way to finishing with a five-over-par, 40.

A product of Caesarea, Israel, Beck had a good start to her round with a birdie on No. 11 and was one-under-par through three holes before going seven-over-par the next three holes.  She went on to finish the day with a 79 and is tied for 60th.  Beck closed strong with three birdies over her final five holes.

Freshman Irene Jung had a great opening nine holes that included eight pars and one bogey on the 17th hole, but struggled on the final nine with a five-over-par ledger as she finished with a 78.  A native of Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada, Jung hit eight fairways, nine greens and had 30 putts in her first round.

Playing as an individual, sophomore Courtney Ellenbogen collected a season-best round of 75 on Monday and is tied for 29th.  She hit 10 greens, nine fairways and had 29 putts on the day.  Ellenbogen had two birdies on her first seven holes and played her final 14 holes at even par.

As a team, Duke's four counting golfers -- Duncan, Cangrejo, Kim and Jung -- played the opening nine holes at three-under-par and led as a team when it made the turn.

The Blue Devils will open the second round at 12:40 p.m. (EST) along with UCLA and Denver.
