DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Henrique Cunha of the eighth-ranked Duke men’s tennis team was named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the conference office. Cunha has garnered the award for the 16th time in his career at Duke and for the second time this season.
A native of Jaú, Brazil, Cunha captured two wins over ranked opponents in singles, while also partnering with sophomore Raphael Hemmeler to defeat two ranked tandems in doubles. For the season, Cunha owns a 12-2 record in singles against nationally ranked opponents, while the senior holds a 13-1 ledger for the season in doubles against ranked foes along with Hemmeler.
In Friday’s 4-3 loss at Virginia, Cunha and Hemmeler, the No. 1 ranked tandem in the country, downed Virginia’s second-ranked duo of Jamere Jenkins and Mac Stylslinger, 8-3, while Cunha also bested fifth-ranked Jenkins, 6-4, 6-0 at the top singles position.
In the team’s 7-0 win Sunday at Virginia Tech, Cunha and Hemmeler continued their strong play in doubles, as the duo edged the Hokies 21st-ranked pair of Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini, 9-8 (2) to seal the doubles point for the Blue Devils. In singles, Cunha won his 12th consecutive match of the dual season over No. 73 Bjerrehus, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3.
