DURHAM, N.C. – A number of current and former Blue Devils have been active on the courts this summer, competing both in the United States and abroad. Former All-American Henrique Cunha continues to put together an impressive summer, having claimed his second singles title in as many months.

Current Singles Ranking: 355 l Current Doubles Ranking: 524
A month after capturing the second professional singles title of his career at the Thailand F6 Futures tournament, Cunha added another crown to his collection at the Venezuela F1 Futures last week in Caracas. The 2013 Duke graduate won all five matches in the main draw in straight sets, topping Mauricio Echazu of Peru in the final, 7-5, 6-3. Prior to heading to Venezuela, Cunha advanced to the singles final at the USA F16 Futures in Buffalo, N.Y., and paired with fellow Brazilian Thales Turini to reach the doubles quarterfinals at the Manta Challenger in Ecuador.

Current Blue Devils in Action:
Nicolas Alvarez (Freshman) - Peru
Alvarez, who is set to join the Duke program in the fall, has appeared in a number of junior international tournaments this summer. The Blue Devil signee played in the singles and doubles main draw at the Roland Garros Junior French Championships as well as at the Nike Junior International Roehampton and The Junior Championships, Wimbledon. Alvarez reached the doubles round of 16 at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Cale Hammond (Redshirt Senior) – Tulsa, Okla.
Hammond competed in the USA F15 Futures in his hometown of Tulsa in mid-June, winning two singles matches in qualifying play.

Daniel McCall (Junior) – San Francisco, Calif.
McCall earned a spot in the 2014 U.S. Open National Playoffs by winning the men’s singles title in June at the United States Tennis Association Southern California sectional qualifying tournament in Claremont, Calif. He will travel to New Haven, Conn., next month to compete for a berth to the U.S. Open. In the meantime, McCall has also been active in Futures tournaments, advancing to the round of 16 in singles qualifying play at the Canada F3 Futures in Richmond, Canada in late June. He also paired with recent Xavier graduate Mesa Mei to reach the main draw round of 16 in doubles at the Canada F4 Futures in Kelowna, Canada.

Chris Mengel (Redshirt Senior) – Pittsburgh, Pa.
After missing the 2013-14 collegiate campaign due to injury, Mengel has returned to play this summer. He won two qualifying singles matches at the USA F16 Futures in Buffalo and teamed up with fellow Blue Devil Jason Tahir in the doubles main draw at the USA F19 Futures in his hometown of Pittsburgh in early July. The Duke duo opened the tournament with a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Jeremy Efferding and Shane Vinsant and defeated Gustavo Guerses and Jorge Montero, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals before falling to the English tandem of Luke Bambridge and Liam Broady, 4-6, 3-6, in the semifinals.

Jason Tahir (Senior) – Rochester, N.Y.
Tahir has also been busy on the Futures scene this summer, competing in the singles main draw at the USA F16, USA F18 and USA F19 tournaments. He played his way into the singles quarterfinals in Buffalo and paired with Mengel to reach the doubles semifinals in Pittsburgh earlier this month. Tahir also played in the doubles main draw in his hometown of Rochester in late June, teaming with Marcus Fugate to notch a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6) win over Pavel Krainik and Zachary White of Canada in the round of 16.
