DURHAM, N.C. - Junior Henrique Cunha and sophomore Chris Mengel have been selected to compete in the 2012 NCAA Individual Championships May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., as announced Wednesday by the NCAA.

Cunha and Mengel both earned at-large bids to the 64-player singles field, with Cunha earning the No. 5 overall seed. The two Blue Devils will also compete together in doubles after being selected to the 32-team field.

A three-time All-ACC selection, Cunha will be making his third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Singles Championships. The junior from Jaú, Brazil advanced to the quarterfinals of last year's tournament before falling to Michael Shabaz of Virginia. This season Cunha owns an overall record of 35-8 and a 21-7 mark against ranked opponents, including wins over the No. 2, 6, 8, 11, 14 and 15 ranked players in the nation. In fall singles action, he reached the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships and the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships.

Mengel earned the first NCAA Individual Championships selection of his career and is 30-11 overall in singles play so far this season. A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Mengel has posted 10 wins over ranked opponents and last week received the first All-ACC accolades of his career. The fall season saw him capture the singles title at the ITA Carolina Regional and advance to the round of 32 at the ITA All-American Championships.

Cunha and Mengel will be making their first appearance as a doubles tandem in the NCAA Doubles Championships. The Duke duo is 16-8 overall this season with five victories over ranked doubles teams. Cunha was selected to the doubles field each of the past two seasons with former Blue Devil Reid Carleton, reaching the quarterfinals of the tournament in both 2011 and 2010.

As a team, Duke received the No. 8 overall seed in the NCAA Team Championship and was selected as one of 16 regional host sites for the tournament. The Blue Devils open play in the first round on Saturday, May 12 at 12 p.m. against George Washington, with LSU and Northwestern also competing in the Durham regional.
