ATHENS, Ga. - The draws for the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships were released on Tuesday with Duke's Reid Carleton and Henrique Cunha finding out who they will play first as the top seeds in the tournaments.
Carleton and Cunha are the No. 1 seed in doubles and have been the top-ranked team in the nation since April 13. The duo's first match will take place on Thursday against Wisconsin's Moritz Baumann
and Marek Michalicka, who are ranked No. 15 in the ITA doubles rankings. The two doubles squads met earlier this season in the fall in the first round of the ITA All-American Championships. Baumann and Michalicka came out on top with an 8-3 victory in the match.
The two Blue Devils have set a school record with 39 doubles wins this season. They are 22-2 in dual matches with six straight wins. The Wisconsin pair went 19-4 during the dual match season.
Cunha is also the No. 1 seed in singles, accomplishing the feat as only a freshman. He draws No. 18 Pedro Zerbini from California and will play tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. Cunha is tied with Ramsey Smith for the most wins by a freshman in school history, posting a 35-5 record. The 35 wins are one shy of the school record for single season victories. He has recorded a 10-1 record against opponents ranked in the top 25 this season and has a 20-match winning streak. Zerbini played at the No. 1 spot for California, going 14-4 in dual matches and 19-6 overall this year.
The singles and doubles championships will take place at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. and will run May 26-31 with the championship matches taking place on May 31.
