STANFORD, Calif. - Saturday marked the end of Duke's tennis season as Henrique Cunha suffered a loss in singles and the team of Cunha and Reid Carleton fell in doubles during the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Individual Championships at Stanford, Calif.

Cunha was defeated in a matchup between two top 10 players. No. 8 Cunha went up against No. 5 Michael Shabaz of Virginia in a battle of ACC foes. The first set featured a total of five breaks with the key one coming at 5-5 with Cunha going up 6-5. He was then able to serve out the first set for the 7-5 win.

Shabaz was able to jump out 3-0 in the second set with a break and then would hold serve throughout for the 6-3 victory. In the deciding third set it was all Shabaz as the Virginia senior took the set 6-1 after leading 4-0 to start the set.

Cunha ends his sophomore season with a 37-10 singles record. The 37 wins rank second most in school history, two behind his own total of 39 from last year. In his first two seasons he has tallied a 76-16 (.826) overall singles record.

The doubles contest was between No. 7 Carleton and Cunha and No. 14 Kevin King and Juan Spir of Georgia Tech. The match would last over three hours with a pair of weather delays throughout the match.

The first set came down to a tiebreaker with neither side leading by more than one game. The tiebreaker was equally as close but Duke never trailed. Carleton and Cunha took a 4-2 lead only to see King and Spir come back to tie it at 5-5. The two Blue Devils then won the next two points to take the first set.

Following the first set there was an hour long rain delay. Once the match resumed it continued to be tight between the two teams with Georgia Tech getting a break at 3-3 the only difference in a set that went to the Yellow Jackets pair 6-4. The third set was on serve until another delay came with Duke leading 4-3. The delay was a short one at around 10 minutes but when the two teams started playing again Georgia Tech won the next three games to close out the match with a 6-4 third set victory.

Carleton and Cunha conclude a strong season with a 38-7 overall record. The two hold the Duke career record for wins by one duo with 79 wins in the last two seasons. Carleton is the only player in school history with two 40-win doubles seasons as he went 41-7 this year and ended his career with a 117-41 doubles mark to finish second all-time.
